What gives you away as a coin collector?

I regularly share pictures of coins with my close friends - either new purchases, or ones that I don't own but think are interesting. All of my relatives and friends know I'm a coin collector. I think it would be very difficult to hide it, even if I wanted to.

How about you? Are there things that you do or say that give away the fact that you are into coins?

Dan

  • YES! I have coins and coin books scattered all around my room. On my desk, my computer desk, my dresser. Plus all I do is read these forums when I am on a computer.
  • I kind of avoid it actually. I'm not embarrassed or anything.... but with peers no one really appreciates it, and I dont want some random student to find out and ravage me of any coins I might have in the apartment at the time. Family + close friends, etc are the only ones that know
  • Same here, I have books all over the house laying around. Coin World, Numismatic News etc. Although, if someone is visiting I make sure everything with coins is out of sight.

When the new nickels came out, I bought a bag and gave a bunch away to non-collectors at work. I thought maybe I could get some non-collectors interested.

The people close to me at work know. I actually have them trained to bring me new nickles and quarters, ok I am the boss and it does have some perks.
When I actually show them a true classic coin they go (in true Bevius and Butthead fashion) Duh, Cool Dude.

  • What gives me away? The fact that I give away coins. Thoughtfully done, coins can be a really cool inexpensive gift. Access to darkside coins adds to the cool and cheap multiplier.

Sadly, I don't tend to mention it much anymore. I have found very little interest on the part of non-collectors in recent years. 20-25 years ago, non-collectors would sometimes bring me small hoards of old coins for my opinion. Sometimes they contained some nice material. In recent years these hoards seem to have dried up. The coins that
have been shown to me by non-collectors have been nothing but junk.

I must admit, I keep my collecting very private. Nobody outside of my house would ever know that I'm a coin collector with the exception of maybe the mailman (auction catalogs).

I try to be discrete just for security, but most of my family and a few coworkers and close friends know that I collect. I actually carry a 16x loupe with me 24/7, but when questioned I always say it's for approving 4/C printing jobs.

  • I'm open about my collecting. People at my work place know that when they run across coins they're not familiar with I'm the guy to bring them to. Every now and again I show off a new purchase. The security issue doesn't worry me. My collection is pretty low value (I'm too young and broke for big dollar coins) and my house screams, "THERE IS NOTHING OF VALUE IN HERE!"
  • When I get change from a store, I hold up the line by pulling out a loupe and checking each coin meticulously...

Absolutely nothing. When I'm busy at it, I'm in and out of my safe deposit box a fair bit. Two of the ladies at the bank are my neighbors; another is the mother of several students of mine. I think that they suspect the box is full of cash, maybe the odd handgun or two, and that I'm doing something shady to supplement my teacher pay. I'm comfortable with that...

I've got just to much nerve. I pear into cash registers in stores and have actually asked Hey, can I have that coin in the right hand side of the drawer. I ask everyone I know if they have any old coins laying around. I ask at every garage or yard sale if they have an old jar of coins. I ask at estate sales the same thing. I find myself saying to friends as they pull change out of their pockets or purses if I can see that. I give out half dollars for change as much as possible and lately have added $2 bills to my fun stuff to give for change. I pass out the Red Book, one proof set and one uncirc set to many peope at Christmas. I brag about complete sets to everyone I know just to much. I mention coin shows to everyone sometimes to people I don't even know. Other than that, nut much.

For security reasons, family and one close friend(who is also a collector) are the only ones that know.
