State Quarter Varieties

I've put together four sets of uncirculated state quarters for my grandkids, through 2005. Can someone give me a complete list of varieties I should look for to make these sets a little more sophisticated?

    Tough question.

The simple answer is the up and down leaf WI-D issues but there are some who consider these accidental
    and hence not true varieties.

The longer answer is that it depends on your definition of variety. If you use the CONECA definition then
there are no other varieties but some people consider rotated dies to be more like varieties than errors
since they do repeat usually and do affect the die. While rotated dies are quite scarce in modern times,
they do show up on quite a few of the states issues. There are probably at least eight or nine of them.

I am one who considers rotated dies to be errors. I would agree that the up and down leaves are probably the only ones worth including in the sets for now.

Here is a list of the eight (or ten) different RR's found on
    the states issues so far.

All the other varieties so far are insignificant and would be of interest only to specialists. There
are some errors that may be of interest. Major errors tend to be quite scarce in the last three
years and unusual on all the states issues. They can command very large premiums.

  • Thanks, guys.
