What if, the transaction to a 100 point grading system was free of charge!

Would you favor a 100 point grading system if you could have all your coins transfered into the new labeled holder free of charge? But you may get stuck with the postage and insurance! image

As long as it takes for PCGS to deliver on a paid service, I can only imagine how long it would take for the "free" conversion. Plus, the hassle of packaging and mailing. I would pass.

And how many coins have they graded? 50 million?

So what other topic could DH discuss in Florida? image

  • No No No. You can change the holders or the grading scale a thousand times. The coins will still be the same. For the sake of all that is decent, Mr. Hall, please maintain the 70 pt. scale.

Who's hair-brained idea was it to go to 100pts?

They will NOT regrade for free.

Would I do it? Nope, happy with 70 pts.

They don't use all 70 right now....what would going to 100 change?

  • Why is PCGS the only TPG talking about this? At least publicly. Are the other TPGs going to join in? What if they don't? To answer your question, what RYK and ajia said.

There is nothing in this world that is free. Even if they regraded the coins for "free" who is to say they are regrading them accurately? Will the market have any confidence in the 100pt scale? If your 67 goes into a 91 holder say, will the new market value for a 91 holder be equal to the 67 holder, or will you need a 95 to break even?

I think this is a BAD BAD BAD idea, and if PCGS does convert to a 100pt scale I personally will never buy a PCGS holdered coin again or send anything to them to be holdered.
  • There is no way iyt could be free. The cost of shipping/postage/handling, the cost of the new holder, assigning the equivelent grade (is a PR69 going to be a PR95???) This will cost collectors millions of dollars and will do NOTHING to improve anything. Whats wrong with the 70 point system, nothing is perfect but going to 100 is only big business trying to get bigger.

Would this be any easier to sell if HRH coquettishly danced and removed veils while winking?

  • I don't care what they do--my coins stay in their original (mostly early type) holders.

    pass

I don't think a 100 point system would work regardless of cost of switching. Some clever numismatist just needs to develop a more repeatable and objective standard.
  • I'm gonna pass !

If 100-point grading is forced upon us, I would submit coins for grading under this new system if and only if:
    1) PCGS used some of the lower numbers and a published criteria to distinguish between all the fine points in well circulated coins currently graded between 1 and 4 (I can tell the difference between an "AG 3.3" and "AG 3.7" Barber coin, but would love my hunches formalized) AND
    2) Grading fees were limited to 25% of the coin's market value -- what the coins actually trade for, as opposed to the current PCGS or Numismedia prices much abused by optimistic sellers of raw or problem coins who often optimistically cite these price guides.

Since I am collector, not a dealer, I shudder at the thought of the profit taking and confusion while the 70-point to 100-point conversion takes place.

    In one word, no.

    No.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • NO.
I have invested though in some very nice 2x2 Intercept shield holders and flips this week.
Everything I write is my opinion.

    Looking for alot of crap.

I would not send them in at all, and keep them in the original holders. I hope we will not see a 100 pt scale!!!!!

You could not PAY me to change my coins over to such a ridiculous animal.
  • For us humans, the duodecimal system (having the standard being 1 thru 12 with 2 extra digits invented in between instead of the 1 thru 10 we all know) would have been a great idea and allow for much easier math if we had started with it from the beginning. But we didn't, and to change now would be, well, stupid. The same way having a 100 point grading scale would have been a better idea than 70 points if we had thought of it. But we didn't. End of story.
  • Who cares?

We don't use half of the grades in the 70 scale anyway.

    This is aburd.

  • Is there anyone actually pushing for the 100 point scale? I know there is a lot of talk about it, but I have yet to hear from anyone who can intelligently convey the need for it. Maybe I'm asking too much. Please- if you're for the 100 point scale- please respond and make yourself and your reasons known.
