I promised myself I wouldn't do this again, but . . . another great 1952 Mantle Auction

The Mick

If you look closely at the back, you can still see the vending curl.

And just when you think you've seen every possible question and answer, there's this beauty:

Q. I dont know which book you looked in, but this card is worth a lot more than $18,000. What will you do if it only sells for $8,000 or $9,000?

A. I paid $12,000 for this card and over the years I have made my money back plus more just by charging people money to look at this card for a few minutes. I have already made my profit, this card will be sold to the winning bidder and hopefully he will appreciate it more than I do.

Charging people to look at a card! Why didn't I think of that? Just to show you what kind of guy I am, I'm going to let you look at my best card free of charge (well, at least a scan of it):

Not only is it a couterfeit, it's been trimmed. Take a look at both side edges on the back scan. My 5 year old son could cut straighter than that.

I just sent him this question -

    "Hi,

What was used to trim this card - scissors or a razor blade?

    Thanks."

    Shane

  • i don't see anything wrong with it. i'm sure i could get it graded at least a 9 from a top company like PRO. then flip it for at least double what i paid for it. matrix

Wow. Counterfeit, trimmed... All the seller needs now is to put a fake autograph on it and he'll have achieved the "Trifecta of Insolence."

Claiming this card is not a reprint will likely wind you in here with me. My question is what letter or certificate of authenticity do you have concerning this crap?

    MY question to the seller.

    Uh oh. It's back.

Along with this Q and A:

Q: I wanted to buy this card before, why did you cancel the auction.

A: My 8 year old son asked me not to sell this card so I cancelled the auction. Im a man of my word and I said this card will be sold to the winning bidder and im sticking by my word by continuing this auction, I just hope my son will forgive me.

    What about this gem?

"Mickey Mantle was a great baseball player and a true American, for these reasons this card will only be shipped to an address within the United States of America."

    Oh man.

It truly amazes me how absolutely, positively stupid some people are. It also scares me that they exist. I think this guy would have turned out brighter if he had been raised by wolves.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
