Are there gold coins larger than 1 ounce?

Just curious. Modern or ancient - thanks!

There are a lot of them. 5oz Pandas come to mind.

Some 12 ounce Polish gold coins were minted in the late 80s and in 1990, most with images of the Pope. They're extremely rare and expensive.

The Perth Mint issues Kilogram (1,000 grams (32.1507 troy ounces) of pure gold) size Gold Nuggets and Chinese Lunar gold coins. image The China Mint has issued some gold Pandas in that size as well. Not aware of any size larger than that. image

  • A couple of years ago in a thread on the same general subject someone mentioned People's Republic of China KM#358, with a face value of 10,000 Yuan = 1,208.11 USD, and 156 oz of gold; but they have topped themselves several times since then with KM#1153, 10,000 Yuan, 2002, subject Year of the Horse, mintage 15, 10Kg of .9999 gold, 321.475 oz. There have also been KM#1166, same specs, Year of the Goat; KM#1171, same specs, year of the Monkey; and probably a similar coin for the current Year of the Rooster, that hasn't made it into Krause yet. image

But, even those are small compared to the nearly 11KG piece described in item No. 208 at this website!image

  • The Perth Mint Gold coins are made in fractions of Ounces as well as multiples. The sizes bigger than 1oz are: 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg.

More frequently encountered are the British 5 Pound Pieces, at 1.117 oz they are nice.

Mexico Gold 50 Pesos at 1.2057 oz these are nice too.

Still trying to photograph this one.
Australia Gold 50c at 1.089 oz it qualifys but will not be seen often.

  • How 'bout the monster 100,000 Euro piece made by Austria last year? IIRC, it weighed nearly 70 pounds and was, oh, maybe, 18 inches in diameter and [IIRC] an inch and a half or so thick.

I believe it 'commemorated' the philharmonic orchestra...

  • Try Russia. They have minted at least 7 different types kilo coins. Trying to collect all of them is asking for hell.
