Do you guys think this item is best served on an ebay auction? Aren't most "really-deep pocket" bidders a bit cynical about ebay? Do you think it would garner more $ with a Lelands/Sotheby's etc? Or will the absence of the 15% buyers premium actually help the cause?
The guy must be answering offline questions left and right. Ebay is the way to go. Set your reserve, kick back and then see how much action it gets........
One problem with ebay that tends to happen to items like this is they get a lot of bid retractions. People "accidentally" bidding too high just to see the top bid and try to sniff out the reserve. Other than that, it's great to see something like this on ebay, if it is successful.
I think it's kind of funny how much he describes and hypes the card as though the typical ebay buyer with a few hundred K in his pocket might stumble on it and be convinced to bid.
In 1994, Greg Manning Auctions had a sale at the National. I bid the "minimum" on 6 lots.
Next day, I get a call and I won ALL of them. Bill? 5400$!!!!!!!!!!
My wife had TWO major PMS attacks!!!

I can sure relate to that one Around the same time frame, I won a ton of lots from Slaters Americana. I just put in a bunch of bids so I could continue bidding after the 10:00 time limit and weed out what I wanted to continue with after the bidding started to get too high. Needless to say, I fell asleep around 1:30 (remember when some of the old phone auctions used to last til 5-6:00 in the morning?) and was greeted with a bill in the mail the following week with a total of about the same amount....
This guy has over 10,000 feedback with no negs. Must be a good seller. I guess this is all legit then.

IT ANNOYS ME WHEN SELLERS TYPE IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS AND DON'T BREAK THEIR WRITING INTO PARAGRAPHS. IT IS DIFFICULT TO READ AND MAKES THE SELLER LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT (I'M SURE HE'S NOT).
The seller is completely legit. I've bought cards from him with all transactions completed perfectly. Several months ago, he auctioned a PSA 2 T206 Plank and a PSA graded T206 Cobb/Cobb back.
Also, there's a thread about this card on the Network 54 boards, and one post indicates the retracted bid on it revealed a reserve of $224,000.
Just as an aside -- by setting the reserve at a higher level - he can avoid the ebay fees altogether. If the reserve is not met he can see who the high bidder is - contact them directly and work out the payment arrangements and avoid all ebay fees other than the original listing fees. No auction house - no fees -- no 15% buyers premium -- sounds like a solid plan.
Really, don't you think a sale of an item like this would only go down with a sellers Atty and a Buyers Atty involved? If the reserve in fact is well over $200,000, I don't see this transaction completed without some verification/background checks on the item itself. Yes it was graded by PSA. Still, considering the dollar amount in question. It seems questionable that a buyer would slap that kind of money down without some formal documents to confirm the paper/grading trail and then after the sale a flawless paper trail in order to set up the inevitable resale of the item at some time in the future. This e-Bay auction appears simply for exposure for what will be a far more formal sale of the item. When your talking about this kind of cash transaction, fee's would be far reduced in any form of sale of the item wouldn't you think?

I guess Bill Gates might call this pocket change. But for the rest of us mortels WOW!

THIS ONE IS A PSA 2 AND REALLY SHOULD BE A PSA 3.

That's a lot of money!
So is the buyer an "advanced" or "serious" collector?

Steve
Why don't you go ahead and slap a bid of $220,000 up there? You'll have nothing to worry about if the informant is telling the truth
Gee.....gets my adrenalin rushing just thinking about it
Always good stuff up for bid
<< <i>net54 board has a post about this card. someone there actually bid the price up to 1,000,000 and then retracted to see what the reserve was. >>
don't they make you "pre-qualify" for bids before you can bid over like 15000?
