What is this coin

Can anyone tell me what this coin is? Country of Origin? Composition? And how do I determine what it is worth? Thanks, Linda

It's a British sovereign, made of nearly 1/4 ounce of gold, and If I'm not mistaken, it has a South Africa mint mark. In general, these coins are considered bullion, but in many cases, many of them are much more valuable than just bullion. I don't know much about these coins, and someone will come by very soon to give you more details.

That's a British sovereign (assuming it's about the size of a US quarter). It contains about .2354 oz of gold (if I remember correctly). Look on eBay for recent sales to see what it's worth. If the two small letters after the "1925" are "S.A." then it was produced in South Africa and you may hve to look under the South Africa coins on eBay to find listings.

Dang, you guys have eagle eyes! Can't say that I see the SA mint mark below the horse's rear hoof.

The letters to the right of the date are B.P. for Benedetto Pistrucci, the designer. The mintmark will be in the dirt below the horse's rear hoof.

  • Mintmarks on Sovereigns.

Looks to me like a plain ole' London 1925 Sov to me.

    Most probably a re-strike from late 1940's

Would trade at around 20% above bullion in this condition.

Composition is .2354 oz of gold @ .9166 finess (22 carat)
  • Looks like a London mint coin to me too.
