Has anyone seen the new James Elmen catalog?

His introduction is priceless: image

Some excerpts:

"In recent years, the proliferation of computer databases and computer facilitated numismatic publishing has led to the homogenization of coin cataloging style. The attraction of faster and cheaper production is obvious but cheaper cataloging will lead to less imaginative catalogs with elss useful and interesting inofrmation. In catalogs offering foreign coins, this trend is called Iolazation, in catalogs selling U.S. coins it is called business as usual."

...

"The citing of reference numbers is controversial and their usefulness in describing coins is directly proportional to the sophistication of the potential buyer. If a gold ducat of Stolberg-Wernegerode is offered to an advanced collector in Germany, a catalog number from Friederich, the standard reference for Stolberg, will be useful. A citing of the sale price from the Friederich Collection auction by Adolf Hess in 1914 can add extra useful information. The world gold collector may find the Friedberg number from the standard reference of gold coins of the world a useful tool, while the collector who thinks he might like a coin with a pretty deer it will use a KM catalog to get an evaluation from someone in Wisconson who just came in from milking the cows."

...

"Finally, there is the estimate of value. Here 'all bets are off.' Some are based on past auction sale prices of catalog values. Some are designed to make sure the coins will go away and not darken the consignor's door again. Many are based on unrealistic hopes and dreams and occassionally a few estimats seem to waft in on a zephyr from parts unknown hoping to meet a buyer from the same astral plane.'

I'm particularly fond of the Wisconsin comment, even with the misspelling. image

It sure did. I think we netted a few. Exactly which, remains to be seen.
