UGGGGHH!

As some will recall...I recently was looking at a friend's mother's collection of coins her father had left her. This was about a year ago. I remeber stumbling upon a flawless gold coin. Not knowing much about gold at the time..I wasnt too too impressed, aside from actually seeing a beautiful gold coin.

She let me look at it again a few weeks later, this time I actually sat and looked at it. It was FLAWLESS! I remeber looking for a contact mark or something that made it look like a real coin. I flipped it over and noticed a mark under the eagle...(Knew this coin was too perfect). To my dismay, (not to the owners), I noticed alittle "c" below the eagle. As I stared, it became more clear. By now I knew the coin was pricey if authentic, but I was convinced it was counterfeit becuase of its prestine condition. To make along story short, I told them if the coin was authentic it would be at LEAST a $20K + dollar coin becuase of its condition and mint mark. But I also told them its very unlikely that this coin was real. They were happy and put it back into the shoe box from where it came.

I strongly urged them to take it to a dealer to see if its real. Almost a year had passed so I assumed she had forgotten. Then, today, my friend informed me of the news.

She took it to a dealer, and he said not only was it real, but its was quite possilby the nicest example of a half eagle he had EVER seen. I think he said around high end 65...(even with common dates). He said he could not even place a value on the coin.

Well I was happy for her, but of course she rushed it off to a SD box...so now I will never be able to photograph it. image

But she does have an MS64+ 1854 C Half Eagle, so Ill just be happy for her.

Sure would have liked to share it with yall though...

  • That is neat. I was curious and looked at PCGS’s price guide and they don’t even list an MS-64, but an MS-63 is $40K. Thanks for the story.

  • Sounds like a great find for her. Ask her to allow you to photograph it.

Kewl - these are the best finds - descendants of collectors. Unless there was a serious collector in there somewhere, chances are any "old time" accumulation is mostly junk silver. This guy obviously knew what he had, fortunately his lack of documentation and instructions seems to have gone unpunished.

She needs to get that thing slabbed at least for preservation purposes.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
