How many people do you think chose 86 Topps Baseball boxes over those Fleer basketball boxes at the same price? Unreal for modern stuff. Probably the only "investment" that would pay for people's kids college education like 99.99% of the country thought it would.

Mud Good question.
I did not like the design of the Fleer and wasn't collecting basketball.
In fact, the next year, the candy distributor near my office where I would buy topps was "giving" them away. Nobody wanted them.
I'm just curious - how much did the value of these boxes/cases increase with the popularity of card grading? I wasn't involved with cards at all during that time, so I have no idea how much vintage or 80's wax increased.

David Back in 1992 before grading was anywhere near its apex, the 86F Bkb set with the Jordan card was hot and relatively expensive. The amount for individual packs was pretty high - I'm gonna say 100-150 per. So, IMO, grading had little to do with the initial skyrocket of the popularity of the set.
how much will that water down bball prices...you figure 4 jordans/box....24 boxes/case? that's what 10 new 10's 90 new 9's? not to mention all the other cards in that set.
I won't go into a diatribe as to why modern's cards are garbage.....but "discoveries" like this should be a nightmare for anyone who pays 200+ for modern psa 10 commons.

One found case isn't going to make one bit of difference in the 86 Fleer basketball world - there is way too much demand for it still, and who says the case won't be sold to someone as a sealed case, and then remain that way?
I agree that one found case will not affect the demand for the 86 bkb.
In 1990 I worked at a local Pharmacy in my hometown. It was a town of about 20,000 people and 25 miles outside Chicago. Anyhoo, I would help with stocking and at the counter and wherever they needed me. They had a basement that they kept all the old stock and there was an office down there. I would have to bring stuff up from there and the time clock was there to punch in and out. There was one light fixture down there with the two long flourescent bulbs and that was it. I saw the leftover 89 ud boxes down there and like a mischevious teenager I would grab a pack here and there. I also remember there were topps cases stacked from floor to ceiling and I was tempted to see what was inside but they were all sealed case and I didn't think I could open them without anyone noticing. Thinking back there must have been 40-50 cases of cards and remembering they had leftover packs of cigarettes from the 70's they would let the employees take for free, I bet those dated as far back as the cigarettes.
The building was torn down in '95 and I wonder what happened to those cases of cards. After I saw that building leveled and wondering if the cards were still inside, while I drove upto Eagle River Wisconsin in the summer of '95 for a counsellor job at an sleep away camp there, I stopped at every drugstore I passed by while meandering through the backroads to get to the camp. I actually got a 1980 through '84 waxbox from a guy who still had cases in his basement. He just gave them to me. This was before the internet and most small towns had no idea of the demands of the outside world. I didn't ask him for more because I had nothing to offer him. I was 18 years old and had just enough money to get my 1984 Ford Bronco to Eagle River.
Sorry to ramble but this find brought me back and I wanted to share.
I've done a ton of business with D&A Card World - they are fantastic

I never bid on D&A stuff. 4 years ago they pulled some e-bay auctions at the bitter end because they were not high enough in price. I swore then that I would never spend a dime with them, and I haven't. They are one of the greediest dealers I have ever run across.
For your 1 bad experience w/ D&A, think about all other good transactions where you paid 1/2 SMR or were able to bypass paying a lot of money for something you wanted very badly.
I agree with Duner. There are probably tons of other people out there with large amounts of unopened modern cards. I know I have several boxes as to many of you. I would guess cards from about 1975 on are in huge supply in "discoveries" like this or like Zef mentioned in the basements of pharmacies around the country. Oh well....

You'll only get an average of about 3.25 of each card per box and there is only 12 boxes per case so if you opened the whole thing you should get about 39 of each card. Not sure what % of cards straight from packs will get 10s and 9s but it isnt going to effect anything really. If they were to pre-sell the 12 individual boxes and then crack the case and handle people a box right from it those probably would have a premium because you know where it came from, or it they send boxes/pack right to GAI for grading or wait for PSAs unopened grading they could be more in demand because they were straight from a sealed case.
I am not sure that buying a box is such a good deal heres why, You will pay a major price for an unopened box that may or maynot contain a Jordan. Lets say for arguments sake, you pull 3 of them and they are dinged, or OC, then you just paid a huge price for a box that may not have a 9 or 10 of the holy grail of the set. I personally would buy a graded psa 9 Jordan, and be done with it. I just bought a box of 84 football (marino/elway rc's) busted the whole box, pulled 2 elway's and 1 marino, and maybe I have a shot at One of the Elways getting a 9, while the others will be 8's. Now, the return on that box in pure dollars is negative, whereas had I bought each of those cards in 9's I would have prob spent the same or less than I paid for the whole box. I personally enjoyed ripping the packs so there was some entertainment value there, however, from a purely dollar investment it wasnt worth it. The box was bought from a very reputable dealer we all deal with, and it was not tampered with so I am comfortable with its legitimacy, but I would probably pass on buying a wax box from DAC in this endevor, just my opinon.
Great find. I wondered how long it would take the Fleer vault to creep into the public
What a dilema for anyone that has the coin to buy a box of the 86-87 Bkb... Graded Box would be sweet- Most likely the route for a private collector, but no fun..lol Packing it out would be slow(*And dangerous), but a great way to get some free product.
Or *Rip-It...What a freakin heart-pounding emotional roller coaster ride that would be. My Luck: From Pristine Cherry packs to Mis-Cut commons
Sig: Looking for a recent smr magazine, Please pm if you have one to recycle. Thank You
Complete crapshoot to bust a box or case of 86/87 Fleer. For the most part, cards coming out of an 80's Fleer case were centered the same. If you pulled one Jordan and it was 70/30, then most, if not all of them will be 70/30. Pulling PSA 10's of any particular card in that set is tough, so you'd be extremely lucky to get one PSA 10 Jordan out of the case. Now, if they busted one box and the Jordan's were all 50/50, it might be worth it to bust the case.

That's livin' large!

The ROI on that '86 Fleer case would break most calculators
A $200 case, turning into, what...$100,000 k. What a coup. I don't think any stock has gone up 500x fold in the last 20 years (with less volatility).
