I'm totally shocked that the 61 Alou and the 64 Marichal got 6s! I was expecting 8s or higher! Very sweet looking cards in the raw, I wonder what was wrong with them. The 69 Hunt looked dead perfect, as did the 85 Puckett and the 89 Griffey.
All the cards were picked up on eBay, except the "Bonner" (got from a shop in 1990), Griffey (factory set purchased in 89), and the Puckett (factory set from BBCE a few months ago).
I've got a mess of modern stuff from the 80s and early 90s that I'm gonna submit under this month's special... once I get my cards back. Maybe with the bunch of examples, I'll train my eye enough to avoid sending in stuff that grades 2 or 3 grades LOWER than I expect.
Heh. I remember when I bought that Ripken rookie from the shop. One of my friends and I were the only people in the store with the owner, and I was examining the 3 Ripkens the guy pulled from the case for me to look at. I guess he was getting rather anxious with a couple of 14 year old kids hovering around his cards. Knowing my friend, he was probably walking around touching everything, so that probably drove the owner nuts. The Ripkens all had the same price tag on them, but were all a little different. The one I ended up picking out was the nicest of the 3. The other two had lightly touched corners. He kept telling me "they're all mint, just pick one. They're all the same." I said "Well, there' a little different, this one has a ding..." and he'd angrily shake his head and say "That doesn't matter!" I wanted the card pretty badly, so I went ahead and paid for it and left, never to return. His closed the shop a year or so later. With customer service like that, I'm not surprised.
