1917 Proof Sets - Do they exist?

Walter Breen said he saw a complete five coin set.

David Lange said he saw a 1917 proof quarter.

In this period where "ghost" coins have been showing up, will one of these sets appear?

I do not believe that such sets/coins exist.

Some well respected numismatists have, according to their accounts, seen a Proof 1917 Buffalo Nickel and/or a Proof 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter. I have yet to see a no-questions-asked example of either. Apparently, the major grading services haven't either. Granted, that certainly doesn't mean that the coins don't exist. Let's face it, though, under the vast majority of scenarios, one would think that by now, such coins would have been submitted for authentication and grading.
