And could afford to collect the RED BOOK from cover to cover in top grades, would you draw a line anywhere or just get everything from beginning to end? And yearly updates?

Oh sorry, my ASSUMPTION was that the collection would be being accumulated by throngs of commission buyers and auction representatives just relaying acquisitions to your private ocean liner so you'd know what to glance at when you returned home to supervise the lawn mowing.

Well, if the funds were unlimited, then I'd just the commision buyers purchase everything... period, everything.

    In a word ... NO!

There is far more to collecting than just the Red Book ... why be so restrictive? Might as well travel the world collecting wine, women, and fine pieces of art work be they medallic, numismatic, or otherwise ... image

If I had unlimited funds, I would assemble a collection of all US coins, including patterns, private gold, & colonial coins in the best obtainable grade. The coin collection would include, of course, all die varieties, as well. It would be a Herculean task, to say the least.

If it got to a point where I only needed a few items, I would then add colonial, obsolete, and federal currency.

I would not split hairs and upgrade from a 65 to a 66, but if the item were clearly better in my eyes, then I would seek to upgrade. As I upgraded, I would re-market the replaced specimen.

Frankly, I am sure that this will never be completed, but if it were, I would probably add tokens from colonial times forward and eventually, medals.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Julian, would your state quarters be in maps or slabs?

No, I STILL wouldn't be interested in collecting gold.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

But I would not allow that to happen. You see, I got unlimited funds from this fund fairy too, so I will get one mint state example that you can't have. Sorry about that...

Me, I'd use the funds to start a brotherhood of numismatists to promote enjoyment of the hobby and quash greed and competitiveness. First I'd need a phone booth for the meetings, though.

P.S. There ain't no fairies in da fund.
  • As a numismatic pittance to all you lowly collectors who got left behind when I received UNLIMITED funds I would assemble a date and mint mark specific grading set of all US coins in all denominations whcih includes color and strike designations. PCGS, NGC and ANACS would all be represented so that differences between the companies standards might be noted.

An example of the set: 1979 P Lincoln 1c PCGS P01 to MS68RD, same in NGC and ANACS. Tons of coins.

Once all these coins were collected, the best images possible would be made of them and hosted for free unlimited public viewing at www.forgettheslabyoudontneeditanymore.org.

    enjoy

I'd buy everything that everone else wanted and then sell it back to them for an egregious profit.

Oh, wait, that's already been done.

  • I would buy all the coins that the museum has, complete the collection and then put up a FREE exhibition....then I would create another collection of rarities, obscurities and all vam's, errors and varieties and show them at the other end of the country for FREE.

then I would buy all of Russ' and Marty's coins and melt them just for a giggle.

So, send me 22,000 dollars please.
  • I'd probably pretty much get out of coin collecting. Oh I might still dabble in a few things but not much. And I'd practically move into the national archives and see if I could scan/digitize/transcribe all the mint archives so they could be digitally searched and accessed on-line. It would make numismatic research so much easier.

I'd be a census taker for rarer dates. Like Cladiator's example, I would buy up all the dates I could of a given series, date/mintmark, and try and get a true idea of how many exist. The absolute funds idea is too easy, so after I took my census for a particular coin, I would sell them and start on a new series, date, mintmark. Keeps the fun of the hunt.

I would like the challenge of a complete set of civil war tokens. Wouldn't need unlimited funds but more $ than you'd think.

I'd buy the entire surviving population of several key dates in popular series and once having cornered the market would charge a million bucks for examples in Fair-2 condition.

I'm with Conder, except that I would put a whole team of people in the archives. And fund the ANS to endow the whole thing forever with a boatload of full time curators and real museum space......after that I would give the government a bunch of money to properly inventory and display the NNC and put it on the web........the last part would be tricky since they would try to divert all the money for other nefarious uses image

I would buy up every proof 67 or better DCAM gold and Silver coin minted before 1921!
