from wax to cardsaver = min size req???

About a month or so back I purchased a 77 OPC WHA wax box from Steve Hart and opened it "live" on the boards here. Some of you may recall. The box was pristine. Thank you BBCEX! I actually only opened half of it, then pulled out all the miscuts (66%) and cherry picked the remaining 33% for a 70's submission. Out of that 33% I felt 60 cards had a shot at the coveted PSA 8-9-10 range for my registry set. The grades popped today and 13 of the 60 cherry picked cards were not holdered for not meeting the minimum size requirements....................THIS BLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the heck are we supposed to do if cards straight from an unopened wax box aren't up to PSA's standards? I'm pretty sure I may stop submitting myself and just buy what I need slabbed.

I just had to vent and share with the board. I'm pretty happy with the grades on the cards that were good enough for PSA. Especially the 9 on the Howe (Line 1).

Thanks, Bob C.

I don't know anything about this particular issue, but I can share your frustration.
Isn't there quite a bit of tolerence on OPC sizing?
And what's a guy got to do to get a 10 around here? (Reminds me of the joke about the old guy giving directions on how to get to Carnegie Hall....practice, practice....)

Wow, you pulled MULTIPLE cards of players from ONE box that were gradeable? That is impressive, or the colation sucks image

Anyway, I had this happen although not to this degree with 1978 Topps baseball in my first couple submissions. I am at the point where cards that are miscut short are spotted as I break packs. My last two subs have had none of these. I would suggest comparing the non holdered cards when you get them back for future reference? I know it is difficult if you are concentrating on other ventures. For me, I submit just one issue and one issue only so i feel like I have a grasp for these kind of problems with 1978 Topps baseball.

  • Minimum size means the card was cut small from the factory not altered in the after market. so it does not matter where the cards came from if they are cut too small from the factory, PSa will not grade them.
  • PS. they give you vouchers for the cards that dont meet minimum size so you aren't out any money. plus you can get a ruler for $.25 so it might be worth the investment to prevent this in the future.image

I have seen this before on a couple 73 opcs from packs but not too many. you must have just got a box with a bad cut run. send them back , they will probably get graded unless they are really small

I'd take that number to 75%-100% if they are submitted with some other years and card types.

My thoughts exactly. Send all the cards that didn't meet the size requirement in with no others, at least from that issue, and I bet they'll all grade. These are the types of games you have to play with PSA.

Well I just hope that they are not reading this thread and waiting for that stack to come back to them.image

  • Actually my thoughts are along these lines.... If PSA is sending back 25% of a 60 card cherry picked submission from wax for failure to meet minimum size requirements then maybe....just maybe they should review their size requirements for this set.

I have the remaining raw cards in a 250 ct plastic box. The cards are all very similar in height and width. Maybe the odd one or two standout but not 25%.

    half a box =
    24 packs x 13 cards per = 312 cards
60 were not miscuts 252 were
47/60 met size requirements 13/60 did not.

So from a box one would be lucky to pull 95 gradeable cards.
With 25 of them coming back too small for PSA.

This set could be the toughest set ever to build.

    Exactly..........
  • P.S. Some have suggested that the first number in a card's cert. # is a particular grader. I've found that 123/124 numbers of cards that I've submitted have been graded MUCH MUCH harder than the cards that have been slabbed 3.....

    Just my thoughts.

Are you sure the boxes were not tampered with? PSA is ALWAYS on the ball when it comes to spotting trimmed cards. I would contact the seller and demand a refund. image
