He still gets a 2.5 million bonus (he was due either that or 5 mil if he was on the team in march).

He's definitely not hurting for money, and he's still going to get a nice fat payday in 2006.
  • halosfanhalosfan Posts: 2,634 ✭✭✭✭
uh, there is a clause in his contract that calls for him to repay 1.725 mil of that bonus. Shrewd move on the Eagles part ven if they are currently saying they won't seek the money back.

What I took away from today's charade was a person who can't believe someone stood up to his continued BS. Massive props to the Eagles.

The bonus is 1.8 million, which the Eagles may decide to go after.

he's still going to get a nice fat payday in 2006.

not even close to the 7 million he was due to make. Honestly, if Rosenhaus wasn't in the picture I do not think any of this would have happened. TO still would have had TO antics, but with what Rosenhaus talked him into (my opinion), it was all downhill from there ... especially for a player with TO's pride errr fragile psyche.

He wasn't going to make 7 million...it was either 5 or 2.5, he wasn't going to get both.

He will still make a good chunk of change next year, and they player's union is already going to get the 4 game suspension cut to 2, as 'conduct detrimental to the team' is so vague, the team is going to be hard pressed to make the 4 games stick.

He'll only give up 2 game checks, that's it.

The Eagles are as much to blame for this fiasco as Owens is. I'm not excusing Owens at all, but if they had a real leader at QB and coach, TO wouldn't have been allowed to mouth off. Anyone remember how much of a malcontent Corey Dillon was in Cinncinati? Put him under a strong coach and a REAL leader at QB in Brady, and you don't hear anything at all out of his mouth.

The eagles' front office and ownership is a joke. Just look at them being so petty as to resign Akers with 2.5 years left on his contract the day they sever their deal with owens.

  • His agent needs to STFU. Why do these players need these losers...

Gimme a break axtell ... Dillon wanted to win, and when Belichek talked to his Cincy teamates they all said how much of a team player he was. TO's situation is a little different than Dillons

No one knows what was/was not said to TO by any Eagles player or personnel

IMO, this has little to do with money unless you are an Owens apologist.

This has everything to do with the whole "team" concept.

I will agree that the minute Owens stepped out of line, they should have stepped on his face.

The choice of QB and Head Coach is totally irrelevant to the core issue.

The World News on CBS ended with the discussion of the Owens act - not with pics of Owens or his Agent but rather a straight away statement about the concept of "team" and the importance of the "boss" to take a stand even if it negatively affects the win/loss.

Owens is a fraud. He says he wants to continue playing for the Eagles, yet he put his local Philly area house up for sale a number of weeks ago. I don't believe a word he says, and I am glad to be rid of him. It is in TO's mind all about TO and the money - nothing more. Nobody will ever "control" this attitude of his which is detrimental to a football team. He craves negative attention...a psychiatrist would probably call it, "improper toilet training as a child."

    Axtell,

Owens was due to get 7 million next year. It might even of been 9 mil. Your numbers are wrong but
I'm too disinterested to look it up.

    and another thing axtell ...

where do you get this stuff???

Other than you and dirtyharry, I have yet to read or hear anything saying Reid and McNabb should have stepped up. As a matter of fact, I have heard praises on Reid and Eagles brass for having the brass ones to cut him, and McNabb being the consummate pro handling it the way he has. Much like the Rush Limabaugh comments ...

    Leadership.

Reminds of a zillion years ago when Coach Bryant benched Namath for missing curfew. Bryant's take?

"No man is bigger than the game."

Come on...you don't have to be an 'insider' to see Reid doesn't have a backbone when it comes to confrontation and situations that aren't easy.

Reid and co. are just as responsible as Owens in this mess...the Eagles knew they were selling their souls to the devil in signing TO. They knew what they were going to get involved with TO...they knew they were getting a prima donna. They could have dealt him in the offseason when he started this up...but they tried to be the troublemaker he has in the past...did anyone anywhere think it was going to be resolved amicably? Now they are going to pay him hundreds of thousands of dollars, a multimillion dollar bonus, and get NOTHING for him when they have to cut him next year? Yeah, that makes sense.

That gamble came with the territory ... and it didn't pay off. Has nothing to do with yours and yours only so-called lack of balls.

huh? when has Reid ever had the need to be confrontational other than TO? This is the first time there has been any type of trouble under his helm. Trotter and Hugh leaving town was done in the offseason, same thing for Troy and Bobby. It was simply contractual, and not because those guys were idiots like TO.

whatever axtell ... I have you figured out.

    Back to TO.

Sometimes the "words" do count...in his speech:

He refers to "the" team, not "my" team.

He referred to words that "may" have been negative toward McNabb.

To his fans, who have supported him, he refers to "the" incidents and not "his" doing as if aliens came down and made him do this.

When people talk to you - their manner of expression does count - this guy is making a speech and not an announcement of apology. Sometimes the words may bely the true meaning. The guy is probably not genuinely sorry for anything.

Also, TO's "pimp" made reference to other players that have done stuff like drugs or whatever - those are "individually" destructive acts of behavior as opposed to the "team" destructive words of Owens which are collectively devisive and inflammatory.

Keep your shirt on 1420....only my opinion. If the Eagles can live without him - and they probably can - good. Perhaps the plan all along was to let him hang himself. I am just not used to seeing a clown like this run roughshod over his team and teamates without anybody standing up to him. Perhaps the way they handled it was indeed the ends to the means versus engaging him in contoversy. Looks like that's the case. Regards.

huh?? did I scream or something?

I just pointed out that you and axtell are the only two people that believe that Reid and McNabb did NOTHING to nip TO in the bud. Everyone else (most importantly the Eagles team) knows that is not the case.

Blah, blah, blah. I have kept quiet about your junk long enough.

Why aren't you a GM, VP and Head Coach of an NFL team if you know so much?

Guess what? The NFL is not the NBA or MLB. The Eagles will get TO's signing bonus and he will not be paid for the four games. NFLPA or not, the league takes a tougher stance than other leagues. A basic progressive discipline policy was followed and appropriate action taken. Vague policy about detrimental conduct? Check your own employer's HR policy book and you'll see this is standard language.

The Eagles front office is one of the best in the league and once this is over you'll see how they protected themselves financially against exactly this problem with TO. Petty? How about rewarding players for their performance? What a concept!

Andy Reid is a different type of personality. He is not outspoken, but is a strong leader. This happens to follow his deep religious conviction. Along this line, he gave TO many chances to get with the program.

Now, let's talk about how the Bucs have screwed several long time veterans in order to pander to younger players. John Lynch? Joe Jurevicious? Brad Johnson?
