I called US Mint today to order 2005 Mint Sets. Mint is now limiting orders to 10 per customer/household.

  • That limit has been on the website for a while now.

I wonder if the old trick would work of ordering with a slight different name, next door address if you know the people or a relative. I've ordered rebates that were limited to one per household/per name by slightly changing my last name by a letter or adding apartment numbers to the address although I live in a house. I've used abbreviations for my first and middle name and lots of other tricks and so far they all have worked. However, not long ago I placed an order of 12 sets of those with the Mint because I didn't know about the limitation and I received all 12 sets. Should I call them and tell them HA, Ha you messed up? Try ordering more via the net and see what happens or try oneof my old tricks used for rebates. Same thing worked recently with another coupon offer that said limit was 2 and I put down 3 even though I didn't need 3 and ended up giving 2 away.

  • Just wondering... what would be the incentive to order more than 10? These are just uncirculated Mint sets after all.
  • Thanks for reminding me, I forgot to order this year's set.

    Mint marketing.

The old "hurry ... get them while you still can " trick.

As expected, the mint wants to sell more this year than they did last year. Orders have got to be slowing so in essence they are saying " you can't order these - well OK but just ten". Of course there are those who will oblidge the mint and "cheat" - ordering 50 or 100. Better to sell em than to melt em - that's the Mints Motto.image

The rare 2005 coins will be business strikes, not mint satin.

These have been on sale for how long.....

Sounds like a marketing plan by the mint.....

  • I also read on mint site that no more 2004 and 2005 can be sent out after Dec 31 due to legislation stating that all nickels issued after Dec 31 2005 must have Monticello on reverse..get em while ya can I guess link

not necessarily... I had several flaws in my mint set including an error penny, huge rim clip/ding on the half and lots of (unattractive) marks on the quarters.... if you want a good example of everything - you'll likely have to order more than 1.
  • Since the obverse of the 5-c coin is changing next year, various large coin selling outfits are stocking up on the mint sets, that way they can be marketed as "complete type sets" next year. I've seen some nice prototypes...

There is some method to the mint's madness.

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.
