Poll: Coin Budget.

I am allowing myself $100 a month to purchase coins if I get the job that I want. I need opinions on what I should do with it.

I think you should stick to your toned Lincoln collection, and that can be done cheaply and you have a good eye for them. Once you've mastered (or grown tired) Lincoln's then move on.

In any event, do what you want, and not what others tell you...Mike

    I picked "Other".

Do what feels right that month! If you see something, buy it. But if you don't, don't feel like you HAVE to buy just because you have money!

I chose "Save up 2-3 months worth of money and buy one expensive coin."

This is what I do but I do pick up some inexpensive coins along the way. I set a goal of how much money I want to save up to and whatever I can spare I use on coins that aren't to much money. I feel better in the long run and it also gives you something to look forward too.

Buy when you know it's the right coin, but make sure the coins are worth buying. If you buy exceptional coins, you'll be happy with less. Make sure your money goes as far as it can, and make every purchase count. The biggest mistake I used to make was buying too many so-so coins. Now I try to buy many more really PQ coins, instead.

  • Buy what you like! If you see a coin for 20 then snag it. If not, save your funds. If you are like me though, you will spend your funds on other crap like Starbucks and pizza image
  • When I first became a buyer (pulling the trigger on a purchase over melt value) I made the mistake of trying to buy EVERYTHING I liked. I wound up with a hoard of relatively low value junk that couldn't really be considered a collection. I suggest temperence. If you see something that is very appealing or that you know you want go for it. If not, just sit on the money. Something will come along.

Right now I'm budgeting $100 a month to save each month and selling misc. crap on ebay. It's unbelieveable what stuff you have laying around the house brings in a sale. Stuff I'd usually toss or get 25 cents in a rummage sale pulls in $5-$10. Saving that up too and seeing what I have totaled over a 24-30 month period. I want to get a one-time holy grail coin that I'd otherwise never be able to buy. I want a buffalo nickel and would like to find a great one that would fall in the range of what I've saved. If I could save $3,000 over 30 months(without temptation to spend) along with selling on ebay I think I could get a 1926-s in a good grade. The next step would actually be finding that coin up for auction somewhere. Aside that I am allowing myself to drop $20-30 a month to buy a coin or two I like.

when I started out six years ago I did what others here did. Bought alot of low value and crappy stuff. Ended up with alot of coins but nothing impressive. After a few years I decided to trade them all in (many of them) and started a small slabbed type set in MS. My collection(besides buffalo nickels which I have a good number of) consists of 8 type coins but I am much happier and more proud of my collection now than when I had the stuff in AG-G overflowing in albums.

I purchased type set stuff in various mid grades to get my feet wet and figure out what I wanted to collect.....

Now I take my budget and purchase Barber halves for my set, but I do like to get 1 or 2 "homeruns" a year, like my PCGS MS-62 $5 1913 Indian a few weeks ago.....

Basically I think a bunch of $250 coins would be better then a ton of $1 or $5 coins.....
