It is a 1854 Pius IX Bronze medal, 80 mm in size, by medalists Polletti abd Bianchi. The best medal I have even seen, as for price-----sorry it has been sold privately.
I think the one across the street lost the pope. A great medal. The depth of the image is really nice.
What is messing with me is that the image of the hall on the one here looks just like the image across the street that has no pope on the the rev- obv? I don't understand.

There were two on there; this one and the one you were refering to. The one you are refering to is a restrike. At least thats what I read.

Although it has been already sold, generally, what can one expect to pay for one.

Hey Larry- I believe there have only been 2 of these medals that have surfaced- this one being, by far, the better of the two. And let me add that I researched this to death and had some real major darkside pro's look at this piece in person.

Wow that's awesome... either way.. this is a gorgous medal... I think I'm in love
here is a commisioned carving i did about 3 years ago with a 3d look, if you look close ,boxes have 3 sides, cloths also have 3d look as does the old hobo..also the paper hobo is reading has words on it.notice too, the nail heads in boxes
I was priveleged enough to be caretaker for (and figuratively drool over) that medal for a couple of weeks while we were making a custom showcase for the owner. At 80mm x 10mm and weighing nearly a pound, it truly is a stunning piece of art!
Hey Ken, What a great presentation box. I am really glad my medal ended up where it did. It will continue to stay in good hands and be preserved and cared for beyond our years. Thanks you-JRocco
A medal I've been fascinated with since I began collecting coins 30 years ago. From The Beauty and Lore of Coins Currency and Medals by Clain-Stefanelli/Boltin, C. 1975 (my first non-redbook coin book):

Here is a side view Weiss. I was holding it to show a ding on the side that I bet happened in .. errr... let me guess 1861 Let me add in that this baby weighs in at just about 1 full pound---yes pound !!!
The way we mounted that medal trapped by the rim in a two-piece shell, that rim bump is almost completely covered up - you can see this in the above photos.
The medal that Weiss shows is different than the one imaged / discussed here. What was that one? A different Pope? One is amazing enough, but to have 2 different reverses sends me off the cliff.

So does anyone know the price this medal runs for? How many were made or approximate figure of how many exist? And where can one find one? I would really be interested in finding a piece like this.

oh ...and what is it by the way
A great medal. The depth of the image is really nice.

Thanks, JRocco. I always thought it had considerably more physical depth than some might guess. Still, as it is die-struck, it is simply amazing.
