Need ebay advice

I bought an american silver eagle on ebay a few weeks ago, when I recieved it, it had rust looking toning on the obverse, very unattractive. The seller didnt list it as having any toning, and from the picture it looked perfect because of the lighting. He said I could return it within two weeks and I would get a full refund. I sent it back and then I recieved an email saying it didnt have the certificate of authenticity with it, when I clearly place the certificate back where he had it when it was sent to me. He wont refund my money, and I'm not sure what to do... I did not use paypal, as I have been ripped off by them before too... I think I'm done buying coins on Ebay! Someone help!!!

  • the seller is not being forthright, even if he is telling the truth and the coa is missing,
it is free or next to free to get another one because so many of them get graded rendering
    the coa and box useless.
the seller does seem to have you over a barrel though and i'm not sure how to approach it.
You may ask him to return the coin to you without the alleged missing coa, at least you would
have the consolation of the coin.
one more thing, i'm nobody but do some buying and selling on ebay. There are a lot of people who
are on there who are honest and ethical, we far outnumber the crooks.
Just like any dealings, you have to be careful who your doing business with, sometimes the bad element is
hard to spot behind a monitor, but they will eventually tip their hand.

Who's the seller? More than a few of us want to avoid him.

Suggest a partial refund at the very least, ensure he gets the negative he deserves, and let us know his eBay ID so we can avoid his auctions and block him as a bidder...until he changes his ID!
  • What was the date of the silver eagle? Possibly someone here has an extra one laying around.

Here lyes another problem, He mainly sells sports cards and was selling this coin for friend who was sick in the hospital. That said, when I recieved the coin and I emailed him about the toning, he replied "Other proofs we have sold have been somewhat discolored and nobody said anything about it. If your not happy with it return it for a refund. The coin has been in storage since it was bought, we don't have coins graded.Let us know if you want a refund upon our receipt of the coin.
Richard" His Ebay user name deano491
Notice he said we have, we don't, so it seems he sells coins with this other guy quite often so I'm not sure if his username will be very helpful, if his friend doesn't have a problem with sending off unattractivly toned coins either.

It was a 1986 proof. I think I may get one from Heritage, they had one pretty cheep
    Thanks for your help!

  • First, tell him that you talked to several members of a leading coin message board and was advised that the missing COA does not decrased the value. If that does not work, then tell him to send the coin back to you!! He can't just keep the coin and stiff you!!

If he does not send the coin back file a dispute with Ebay. If you have proof the returned coin was received by the seller, Ebay should give you some relief, as it looks like the seller is well-established and should be around for a while.
  • I agree, you should at least get the coin back and he should cover the cost of that mailing. I don't have any spare COA's but maybe someone around here does. In this case neg seems the way to go but you always have to expect the retaliation neg if he hasn't already left feedback for you. At the very least leave neutral stating the lighting used for the coin photo was unsatisfactory

If it were me, I would get the coin back and then drop him a nice Negative feedback to show how much you appreciated the friendly transaction.imageimage

Ok.. so I sent him an email telling him that he needs to send me a check or the coin, I was being demanding, but in a polite way. He replys back asking what my problem is, he says he sent a check Friday... I did recieve a check in the mail today.. that said, why would he tell me he's not sending me a refund after he already mailed the check... I dont think I'm going to leave feedback... I know if I do, He'll give me a neg for sure.
Over at last! Thanks for all your help!

Another unfortunate example of why eBay feedback is worthless.

    .
Reach down, grab hold and give him the negative. If he retaliates, respond to it and drive on. When you roll over, you screw everybody else.

Since he said "we", maybe one person is saying one thing there, and the other person is doing something different?
Ie....person A says "no refund without COA". Person B sees returned coin and request for refund and does so. (or, disagreed with what person A said/did).

That, or the person isn't all there (mentally) and just be happy you are restituted image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
