First Strikes according to the rules set forth by PCGS, to designate a coin "First Strike" multiple criteria must be strictly adhered to by the Grader's at PCGS. The first thing is a representative of PCGS must clip the mint attached strap on the mint box that they are delivered in from the U.S. Mint. Then a representative of PCGS must check and verify the mint packing slip placed on the inside of the mint sealed box and according to a numbering system, must verify that these coins were among the very first truck. They must have been struck by the U.S. Mint within the first month of striking the coins for the new year.

The rarity factor of a "First Strike" coin, especially the earlier dates and the chances of them ever being duplicated in quantity are ten times as rare as a non "First Strike" coin.
