Is it possible to sheet cut?

I got a pretty pristine sheet of cards off of Ebay for $35 bucks. I am wondering if it is at all possible to cut the cards from the sheet in a way that would pass muster from PSA. I would guess not, but with the exact right measurements and a razor sharp paper cutter I was wondering if a person could slice and dice their own cards and still get them graded from PSA. I know PRO would grade them!

  • In the paper-money arena. It is best to use paper slicer. The key is to only use the blade for cutting things of value only. No generic paper. I've seen it work well in conversion to graded paper money. The key to cards is to use a "heavy-duty" paper slicer.

Just contact one of the dealers that buys uncut sheets and ask them what they do.

I have a bunch of 1984 Topps Nestle team sets from Canada (all look like 9s [or 10s!] to me!). Someone really knew how to 'sheet cut' them. They all look great! I think I paid from $3 to $7 for each team set.

If PSA still graded them I'm sure I would have many PSA 9s and 10s! LOL! (how much would a 1984 Topps Nestle PSA 10 Don Mattingly, Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan or a Mike Schmidt, etc., etc., etc. be worth???? LOL!)

edit: PSA graded over 250 of them, before someone told them they were grading sheet cuts! (see Population Report, circa 1984 Topps Nestle!). I wanted to submit the Pete Rose for my set registry, but PSA said they would not grade '84 Topps Nestles any more! Boo Who! image

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

How were 84 Topps Nestle cards originally distributed? Factory set form?

    Stingray:

1984 Nestles were only available in sheets.

HOWEVER - in 1984, large dealers purchased a large quantity of sheets - and at least one of those dealers set up an agreement WITH THE SAME PEOPLE THAT CUT UP TOPPS' CARDS to have them professionally cut the sheets into singles in order to sell as sets. Thus - in 1984, the Nestle cards were largely cut by the very same process as everything else was cut - but since it was not Topps or Nestle that was directly contracting for the cutting of the sheets - they are not currently graded by PSA. SGC and GAI grade them.

Why PSA will not grade them as "Hand Cut" at the very least is beyond me - esp. since it is common hobby knowledge that you could not obtain singles but for in the above-mentioned process.

  • How the heck would PSA ever know if the person did a bang up job of cutting them from the sheet?

Those Mike Shmidt cards and that George Brett card shown here are just beautiful!

It is sad that PSA stopped grading these nice cards. I have a Pete Rose Nestle that says, PSA 10 all over it! Let PSA put PSA 10 "hand cut" on it, I'll still be satisfied.
