Miami better off without Shaq?

Even though they lost tonight, I have to think that them playing without Shaq forces them to be more uptempo team that will score more...they have too many great athletes on that team to be bogged down in a shaq dominated offense.

What do you think?

I don't think so. Shaq is the most dominant center of this era. Even though he's not what he once was any team is better with him the lineup. Up tempo is fine but I'd rather have the big guy in the middle. It makes your offense more dynamic.

A writer for ESPN.com (Bill Simmons) calls this the "Ewing Theory" -- where a team plays better because they previously relied too much on a key player, and hence did not used the remaining talent on the team.

However, Shaq is such a dominant player, I think the "Ewing Theory" breaks down in this case. However, Miami is a 46-win team without Shaq, and should be able to play respectibly until he comes back. With Shaq, they are a 60 win team and NBA Playoff finalist.

I agree that I don't think the Sportsguy's Ewing theory applies here, mainly because of Wade. The offense is not solely built around Shaq. Maybe in his prime it would be the case but now I don't think so.

him alone gets you into the playoffs.. lakers looked real good without him last year.. magic looked real good when he left there also.

The "Ewing Theory" also blows up when you're talking about a truly dominant player like Shaq and not one of the most overrated players in history like Ewing (especially the latter years...). Did you see tonight's game with Toine and Jason Williams getting at each other? I don't think something like that happens when The Big Aristotle is manning the court

Am I starting my team now or 5 years ago? Because if it's now, there's no way I'm starting it with Shaq...too slow, too old, too big to be truly effective for more than 30 mins a night.

KG is a great choice to start a team around...year in and out he simply performs, and I think like Duncan, completely underrated and overshadowed by louder, less talented players.

Wade is hard to ignore, as is Le Bron, both are so talented and physically dominant, it will be interesting to see how their careers pan out.
