2005 Lincoln error penny

I just cracked open a mint set and discovered this penny. It took me awhile to get a somewhat clear shot on the scanner - angles and all - but it's easily visible with the naked eye. It appears to me that in the E in cent, the middle tine of the E continues backwards through the E towards the C, lightens a bit, then ends deep inside the C.

Has anyone seen this or know what causes it? Thanks.

Looks like a die defect of some sort. I'll guess that the die came in contact with something hard and it became part of the design.
I think it's worth one cent but who knows now a days.

Die gouge cause by contact between the die and possibly a piece of machinery or a tool.
