Hello,
Finland is enjoying an unusually warm late autumn, so detecting has still been on the agenda.
In several areas around Helsinki there are old russian bunkers, such as this one. Many of them are from the time of the Crimean war.
I was partly detecting, partly walking around enjoying the crisp autumn weather. This pic looks quite warm and sunny, but I can assure that the wind was raw.. (temp. was three degrees above the freezing point), and the water was very cold!
Happy halloween!.. (the camera was on automatic and the flash went off)
Later the same day I passed a beach.. where all was not "business as usual"..
Almost two feet of sand had been removed in places. And this was particulaly interesting since there had been a restaurant nearby that was popular in the 1800's
I found plenty of coins where sand had been removed, but none older than 1920's. In front of this pile I found my best target..
... a silver bracelet.
The hallmark was really tiny on this one (I had to shoot it through a loupe) and reads as follows:
Maker/importer: T-n = Tolvanen & Kumpp, Helsinki, active 1968 to date
Purity: 830H = 0.830 silver
Boat = Helsinki
Date: R7 = 1970 (bummer!..)
Crown in circle = certified imported product
It's great with the standardized hallmarks when you can trace the history of the item in detail!
The sun sets early this time of year.. this looks nice, almost like a warm summer evening..
..but these three nearby swans (yes, three, the youngster looks like a rock ) give an idea of how raw the weather was.
Finally a few unrelated coins:
Finland 5 Markkaa 1935
A quite majestic coin type rarely dug. This is the lowest mintage coin I've found (440,000). I found it in wet sand and it looked absolutely terrible. After cleaning it looked... cleaned... and the colour was totally off too. I was able to tone it back to close to its normal colour with sulphur and vaseline. Purchasing a tiny amount of sulphur required a visit to the pharmacy and a lot of "ooh-ahh, what do you need it for?" questions.. I answered 100% truthfully They probably thought I was nuts but harmless
Sweden 25 öre 1956
Foreign silver.. although only 40%, and butt ugly to boot!
Happy hunting!

My TV Blog
I see you got the mandatory critter picture, too!
<< <i>Great pictures and story, as usual! >>
Very nice Zot
One of these days I need to do that myself, and get this "Digger's Diary" project together. *Sigh*
I've thought about doing a website of some sort at times... but just haven't gotten around to actually doing it...
Maybe this winter. We shall see.
Or maybe I find something cool that triggers the need to have it on permanent display to show off!
