When applying Goo Gone, how long do you let the coin soak/sit in the solution?

I have a 1917 Lincoln that has gunk in the lettering and would like it removed. Any help's appreciated. Thanx in advance.image

If it is organic, try acetone first. Acetone will not hurt the coin......... so soak as long as you want or until the material is gone. I also have tried a rubber tipped tooth pick the loosen the material.

I would be very reluctant to use Goo-Gone (or any other substance, for that matter) on a coin. I do not know the chemical makeup of Goo-Gone, but it can't be good for copper. The only numismatic context for which I have heard Goo-Gone mentioned is to remove sticky labels from slabs. If you have deposits on a coin which you absolutely must remove, I would heed Oney's suggestion, and use pure acetone. Or just leave it alone. You might not like what you see underneath that gunk.

    1. Acetone is bad for copper.

    2. Goo-gone does not affect copper.

    3. Don't let any coin sit or soak in any substance.

If you have a typical circ Lincoln with typical stuff around the letters Goo-gone will take it away easily. Use a liberal amount of Goo-gone and a new, very soft bristle toothbrush and lightly brush in circles to loosen the dirt. Finish the job with a q-tip soaked in goo-gone and roll the dirt up off the coin.

Far too many people are too scientific and too bent out of shape about this process. I have done this to many coins and have never had any trouble with them - and yes, they do still slab with no trouble if you do it right. Best thing is to practice on worthless coins first.

I take mine to the car wash........ the engine degreaser in conjunction with the high pressure works great, but I have to walk a couple blocks to get my penny back image

nothing hurts a coin that is a common date, and rest assured, if you ruin it, there are...... One hundred ninety- six million, four hundred twenty-nine thousand, seven hundred eighty four other 1917s you can practice on. image
