I picked-up three nice Dennis Eckersley OPCs tonite! 1976 OPC Eck-man's Rookie card in PSA 9, '77 OPC PSA in 9 and a '78 OPC in PSA 8
I realy "paid thru the nose" for the 1976 OPC rookie card. As I was not crazy about the scan, but I "pulled the trigger" anyway. How often do you see a 76 OPC Eck-man RC in PSA 9?? The card is a borderline 9 at best, but I'm 100% sure I could sell it for what I paid any olde time! I have a few 1976 Topps RC PSA 9s of Eckersley (the nicest in my '76 Topps Registry set). What I liked about these three cards is they have three consecutive PSA numbers.
In addition to the lot of three "Eck-man's", I also went a little nutz in upgrading my 1976 Registry Topps set tonite, with the addition of this PSA 10: 1976 Topps #120 RUSTY STAUB PSA 10

First off, that Staub is sweet. An absolute beauty.
I am just wondering why you think you could sell the 76 OPC Eck for more than you paid? Nice card for sure, but if the auction just ended why would it already go for more?

BTW, just curious, speaking of Eck: did he always have that sidearm delivery or did he develop it later in his career?
<< <i>Bob this should be #5 in psa 9 and it puts the one that just went off to shame. pulled it out of a box we opened 2 nights ago. the image and print is unbelievable. >>
Geez packcolletor do you have to take out some of the fun of rbdjr1's winning his card? The card is nice, but you could have worded it a little differently. Your card is better centerd, but his does not appear to have the fuzzy edges like your card does on all four sides. I like em both for thier own qualities.

If packcollector gets a 9, you can come back on the firum and tear it down and then cry about
selling all of your OPC cards.
Loves me some shiny!

packCollector,
Wow! What a pull! Your card looks fantastic! Congrats!
Just curious, did you recently purchase the box or did you have it "salted away"? I was curious as to just how much a '76 OPC wax box costs?
In any event, based on your scan and my scan. You win! But PSA has a way of "bursting our balloons". You just may have a PSA 10 (or 9 or .....never mind! LOL!). (A little "print/ink" blemish over the "H" in the word pitcher, shouldn't lesson your final grade!)
edit: Wow! Again!

Here's some interesting bio info on the Eck-man!

edit: How about this: Having both the "Eck-Man" and Hoyt Wilhelm "in the pen". Eck's side-arm and Hoyt's unhittable knuckler! Oh my! ...And if they both had a bad day, bring in Rivera!!! LOL! Hoyt Wilhelm (I'm not sure when Eckersley picked-up his side arm delivery? I'll do some digging, or maybe someone could "jump in" with more info?)

I'm quite sure I could sell it for more than the $330 I paid. I agree if I were to re-sell it on ebay, I would have to wait until "the dust settles" from the auction that just ended.
I plan to "salt it away" anyway, so by the time I'm ready to sell who know's what a 1976 OPC Eckersley rookie card in mint condition will be worth? My guess a lot more than $330, but I don't care. I now own 4 of his rookie cards in PSA 9 (3 Topps and now 1 OPC!, Oh yeah! I aloso recently picked-up a OPC PSA 9 oc for "peanuts on ebay").
edit: P.S. Funny, I also picked-up privately last week (i.e., from someone who also posts here! LOL!). A beautiful 1976 OPC #202 PSA 9 (A.L. ERA Leaders: Palmer/Hunter/Eck-man)

That leaders Eckersley is infinitely rarer, as it is a 1/1. Who's the buffoon who sold it to you...?

LOL!
edit: (That '76 OPC Goose Gossage PSA 8 was also a treat! Thank you mystery seller!)

rbdjr, you are building quite an impressive OPC collection.
I've had this box of 76OPC and later years since the early 90s - got them from the BBCKid. I paid around 600$ for the 76 box.
I was thinking at one time of having the packs graded since they look so nice.

Your Eck is a beauty! Also is lacking alot of the rough cut that I'm accustomed to seeing.
Congratulations on a nice pickup at what looks like a good price!

<< <i>Bob , I bought the box from lelands a few months ago. con40 and I split it ripped it open over a couple of beers the other night. that card came out of the 1st pack which also had a popped seal!!! it was all downhill from there but we did pull alot of other nice cards just not the biggies centered. keith has a dead mint palmer and reggie and the eck leader. I mean dead mint . I have some other nice stuff that I will post when I get a chance, I'll even post some of the beautifully oc stars >>
Problem with the OPC's is that if an inexpirienced grader gets them, they will kill them. I busted a 77 OPC box and the grades were not what I would have expected. I have recently resubmitted 6-7 of the stars that I thought got hit by a bad grader so we shall see. My main problem with the 77 OPC's was the centering on the back. It may have been the box I got, but some of the fronts were dead on and the backs were missing half the logo.

all the 77's that I have busted have had the same problem. snow chipping in the real dark areas was another issue with the 77's.
