Why do some PSA dealers sell NM-MT cards raw ?

Seems like if they had all these NM-MT raw cards graded as PSA 8's they'd be able to get a lot more money for them.image

  • It's a matter of economics....you can't grade everything!!
Even at $5 a card in high volume..you could be looking at 1,000s of cards a month...
For the simple idea of keeping inventory moving and your money liquid...you buy and sell and turn-over alot faster than grading.

You can make more money in the long run....but what about the cards that won't grade high...what about the slightly OC cards...then you have to figure...you spend $5 on a card to grade it to sell it for $12 as a common PSA 8.....why bother if you can sell the same card raw for $6-9? Sure you make good money on some cards....it's the rest that will kill you...

I think it's what you may be thinking Wolf

He bought the set decrying there's no way these babies are Nmmt - at best exmt and now they've made a quantum leap to Nmmt.

I agree with 5stat, sometimes the economics just don't make sense to grade some of the cards. I have sold a lot of graded cards, all that I paid to get grade and I have learned that some cards are not worth grading with the intent to resell. I once bought a run of 1959 fb that came from vending and were sweet. I thought I had several with 9 potential. I only got 2 9's out of the 50 or so I sent in. When I got the cards back I sold many of them and realized that I could have sold some of the 8's individually for about what they sold for graded 8. The 7's didn't even sell for the $5 to recoup the grading cost. These probably would sell for $5 raw and the $ would go to me rather than PSA.

When I list raw cards I always provide a larger scan than necessary just to show the accurate condition and I state what I think the condition is and I never say better than NM+. I also say that grading varies from person to person so please look at the scan and form your own opinion. I would never claim a card is MINT as the seller here claims the set to be.

My other thought is that maybe he is selling them on consignment.

Though I've successfully bought PSA stuff from this guy, he also used to sell lots of GEM graded cards, IIRC, so I won't say he is the world's best seller.

Exactly! Or, the key cards in the set could have been switched out for grading, replaced by his ex-mt cards.

I agree with all of the above. I think everyone has hit several key points.

The allure of buying raw cards for many (myself included) is submitting and receiving psa 8+ cards. The fact that that rarely happens (at least for me) is a reason we don't weigh as heavy when buying raw though.

I agree, seller's don't have enough time and they also can tell a borderline nm/mt from mt card as well.

  • I sell quite a bit on ebay and the way prices have been for PSA 8's for some years in the 60's and just about all the 70's, I might have to start selling my nrmt/mt stuff raw.

  • Not to be OT, but the two bidders who have 0 feedback are both the same person (along with another current 3 ID's) who has over 30 NARU'ed ID's. Ebay just keeps letting the guy back on again and again..........

It this odd that Jasone9527 only started his ID on 10-21-05?? Just a coincidence?

  • I have reported all 5 of his "new" ID's to Ebay (and they have done nothing), and what is funny is that one seller cancelled all of his bids and then less than an hour later, he comes on with another new ID to bid on the same items!
  • $1,000 is too much for a 1960 Topps football set, raw especially.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

the winner (macpsa) frequents these boards on occasion. I also see that DSL was in the mix too.

this same seller is also involved in the Orr tampered thread.

I have bought from this guy 1x. a lot of 20 psa 8 graded 65 topps cards. luckily for me that deal went smooth.
