That said, I (believe I) heard at SF that PCGS was planning to completely redo the numbering system by the year's end. I don't know what the plan was, but I think it was to, at the very least, change the numbers needed for a submission form...
if this is indeed a change, the earliest possible date that it can be verified as incorporated would be helpful to us all. does anyone else have a coin that can be traced to a date from a submission form??
Grades just posted today on one of my submissions. I'll check the label when they arrive.
I too had heard about the proposed rework of coin numbers. I asked David Hall about this at the last LB show and was told that they have now scrapped the idea.
Ok, so we know they were using the coin and series numbers around 10/18, and if EagleEye's coin isn't some kind of fluke error label then they must have changed between the 18th and the 29th. So what we need now is confirmation that this is an actual change. Anyone who gets a shipment back in the next few days PLEASE report what your labels are like.
Oh and don't bother reporting if your submission was Bullion or modern commems. They don't use coin or series numbers.
sent out coins 10/11/05 were shipped back 10/28/05 and received today- still have series and coin numbers on them. Quite dissappointed too- sent a cracked out NGC ms-62 1806 halfcent- Pcgs only graded it au-50. weak strike but not worn- will try again later
I think the label looks nicer and less cluttered like that. I dont think anyone actually uses those numbers anyways. It is way easier to just look at the coin in the holder.
Many of the coin related databases require the PCGS number as a reference. Therefore I personally prefer the PCGS coin number present on the front of the holder.

Wish I'd known this yesterday. I'd have picked up something at the ISNA show that I saw.
David, since you have inside information, when did they START putting Coin numbers on modern commems? I saw them for the first time yesterday. And now you say the coin and series numbers have been discontinued on the label.
WTCG, the number you're talking about is very handy in lots of applications. That one is apparently staying on the label. It is the first four digits in the serial number on the slab pic Rick posted.
The coin and series number they are deleting had less application. In fact, I'm not really sure what it was used for (other than I think the way PCGS organizes it's Registry Set database which is apparent only if you closely scrutinize the URL as you navigate the Registry.
From everything I've read in the thread so far, it appears to me that the series number and coin number that currently appear on the PCGS label will CONTINUE to appear on the label. David said no more series/number info on the FLIP. I assume he means the flip that accompanies the coin before it is put in the slab.
If I am incorrect in my assumptions, I would like to hear it officially. I personally LIKE the series and coin numbers on the labels, although I would like to see the numbering of the coins revised and updated. Steve

You're right about that. I didn't notice that until after I made my post. The coin number is still on the holder, which is good. The series and coin list numbers aren't that important.

I saw the newer labeled holders today and they looked wierd at first. After a while I like the newer look as it removes some clutter around the grade and serial numbers.
I don't know about getting rid of the coin and series number, but I got an order back this week of copper coins with no designation for the color. Two of the three coins had no designation for the color on the label. An 1874 Indian graded MS65 along with a 1927-D Lincoln in MS65. From what I heard through the grapevine, I was not the only one. What are the Chinese characters for RD?? I am guessing a blank.

Perhaps Eagleeye's coin is a "typo", like RYK's "MS40" Dahlonega!

<< <i>Makes sense to get rid of all of the American words on the holders well ahead of when the grading gets farmed out to China.
coin series and numbers not on the holders.
