OT: Fairly clever eBay phishing email

I don't know if it's because I haven't had my coffee yet, or because this one is particularly clever, but it almost suckered me (by which I mean actually got me to click on the button/link, because I usually delete these based on the subject line).

Anyway, an HTML formatted email (all of which should be banished from this plane of existence, but that's another story) in the guise of a message from eBay member "rivernick". The message read something to the effect of "I am still waiting for the package. What happened? mail me soon or I will report you to eBay." Since we've been listing 10-30 items a week on eBay, I have been introduced to a whole new world of jacka$$es and illiterate morons that I never knew existed. Assuming this was another one of those, I actually clicked on the "Respond Now" button. It takes you to a page that is a pretty good double for the eBay login page. But then of course, I noticed the URL was some strange IP address with a redirect to eBay's login page and then closed the browser and deleted the email.

Anyway, now that I've thoroughly bored you, I'm going to find my coffee.

  • Josh - you need to run a virus scan on your computer RIGHT now - a lot of the websites that you get directed to from those emails will also plant cookies and trojan viruses to capture keystrokes, etc from the legitimate use on the computer...

Yeah, everything came up clean. I think using Firefox saved my butt on that one.

  • Thanks for the heads up.

I've noticed the phishing emails are getting better and better.

The only things giving them away nowadays is the url, and the fact that they don't address you by your actual name. Authentic emails from ebay and paypal will always address you by your name, not your screen name.

I always hover my mouse pointer over any links in the email so i can see where the link leads to. It's amazing what some of them will say.

I got the same one, and have had several others wanting to know "where's my item?", which I find interesting since I haven't listed anything on e-bilge in months image

Boy that is a nice thing to wake up to. This is why I never do anything before coffee.

    Scary development.

I have often noted that there will be a scam made that could fool any one of us at a given time. This one might have fooled me if I hadn't read this thread, so for that I thank you!

I agree, after my 91 listings I answered a lot of e-mails from some strange people. That scam might have got me!
