ok vote for the top sets

Thought it might be interesting to get everyones idea of what they feel the top sets for each sport in each decade.
Heres what i prepose but by all means feel free to toss something extra in as i have lefgt out the 80,s and and baseball can can broke down into much tighter eras.Anyway here goes

For basesball

TOP TABACCO SET
TOP PRE WAR SET
TOP 50,S
TOP 60,S
TOP 70,S

For Football Top pre 50,s set
Top 50,s set
Top 60,s set
Top 70,s set

same for basketball and Hockey and toss in your top insert or spec set from each sport.

As for me i really only track football so i will limit my picks to the true king of sports image

pre 50,s only really 1 all star the man himself Don louchios 35 Chicle with a gpa of 8.35

50,s has some top notch sets Verno two 55 AA SETS WITH A GPA OF 8.98 AND 8.59
Mark W WITH A 54 BOWMAN SET OF 8.97 FOLLOWED CLOSELY BY SKITTLES 54 BOWMAN SET OF 8.92
Placejester with a 55 bowman set of 8.60
MOSH with his 53 bowman set of 8.28 although that was stonegates set so since mosh did not biuld it i cant vote for him.
Davalillo yes dav With a 52 bowman small set of 7.98 maybe the hardest year of all issues from the 50,s

Anyway my vote will go for the 2nd tear in a row to the king of the topps All American Joe Verno
image

Now onto my personal playground 60,s football and do we ever have some sweet sets.Just to mention a few Nearmt mike and his 8.94 GPA ON 60 FLEERS WOW or Frank Evanov over a 9 GPA unheard of on 64 phillys.
1 OF the toughest battles this year was between the FUZZ and John Vineyard on 61 topps with Fuzz edging out John 8.35 to 8.34
A very tough year 63 topps with MACPSA AT 8.18 and Wolfbear hot on his heels at 8.11
66 TOPPS mosh AGAIN WITH A 8.48 but again i hear he bought the set and the Fuzz yet again at 8.27 both are very high gpa,s for what may be the hardest set of the 60,s
Mosh again in 68 and 69 but i already said i dont vote for buying a set just building it.
Still i cant ignore a gpa over 9 on any set and Frank gets the nod in a close 1 over our own near mint mike and his 60 fleers

AS FOR 70,S FOOTBALL MOSH AND HIS 72,S HMMM think he bought that set? was a tough call here between Dave Lemon and his 71 set or sideplates and his 74,s in the end Sideplates GETS THE NOD IF FOR NOTHING ELSE HOLDING OFF THE MIGHTY MOSH WITH A GPA OF 8.58.

As for a oddball set i will give that to THE MOSH empire and the 66 funnyrings set a very hard issue to find even though he bought it at least he bought it from me image

Anyway guys here is my take thats hear what the rest of you 1% think image

Pre '50s - 1948 Leaf Football William Gray ... 100% complete at 7.93 ( finest possible set rating 8.02 ). The next closest set rating is 100% complete at 6.39. This set should receive HOF consideration.

The '50s - 1952 Bowman Small Football Davalillo ... 96.53% complete at 7.98 ( finest possible set rating 8.34 ). I consider this set to be more difficult than its big brother! The next closet set rating is 48.61 complete at 6.11. The '53, '54, '55 Bowman sets and the '55 Topps AA are so tough if you consider GPA alone. These sets were meant to be showcased in the Registry!

The '60s - 1965 Topps Football Dave Lemon ... 100% complete at 8.28 ( finest possible set rating 8.64 ). Tough set and he surpassed a HOF set ( 707 Sportscards - LTD- Them 65 Tall Boys ) to boot! I have to acknowledge the '60 Fleer ( .89 GPA over 2nd place ) and '64 Philadelphia ( eye-popping GPA ) sets as well. Honorable mention to the '67 Philadelphia ( Skinfans ) set. Also, you can't ingnore MOSH's run of great sets!

The '70s - 1974 Topps Football Sideplates '74 Topps Football ... 96.40% complete at 8.58 ( finest possible set rating 9.02 ). It was close, but because of the set size vs. '71 and '72 Topps, this set is more than worthy! After '71 and '72 Topps, Honorable mention goes to MOSH for his '79 Topps set. There will be some nice sets in the mix by next year as set completition % increases. Could be a future decade MOSH sweep?

The '80s - 1986 Topps Football Museum of Sports History ... 99.75% complete at 9.30 ( finest possible set rating 9.41 ). The '84 Topps set received praise last year as the Modern Football Set of the Year, but there are other quality sets behind it. MOSH's '86 set has no competition! The next closest set rating is 31.31% complete at 9.00. Other strong candidates include the & '85 Topps USFL ( MOSH ), '85 Topps ( Rider & MOSH ), and '87 Topps ( Jason G & Mintgradedcards ). There will be some nice sets in the mix by next year as well as set completition % increases. Could be a another future decade MOSH sweep? Honorable mention to the top six '89 Score sets.

The 90s - 1998 SP Authentic Football Fabfranks ... 96.03% complete at 9.47 ( finest possible set rating 9.75 ). Frank has a lock on the '90s SP football releases, however MOSH has recently started working on the '90s sets. There will be some nice sets in the coming years as set completition % increases.

I mentioned this set in another thread:

    1949 Eureka Sportstamps

Although an obscure set, the Woodman has amassed an incredible set. (9.24 GPA out of a possible 9.25!!) And then the time and energy which went into pictures and descriptions.

HOF set for sure...........but perhaps too obscure for most......

It appears that the closest to finest 1960's football set is MOSH's 1960 Topps set, which Frank E. put together. Its rating is 8.83 of a finest 8.90, a shade better than Frank's 1964 Philly set.

  • Hi-
I have to cast a vote for the best insert/oddball set of the year for football! My vote goes to John Reeds 1970 topps super glossy football set that includes all 9's and 6-7 PSA 10's that are 1/1's. This set is EXTREMELLLLLY tough to get 9's in, needless to say any 10's.. There, I got my 2 cents in!

I realize not everyone has the time to scan their cards,
but when I look at the registry I do so to look at pictures, not just a bunch of numbers.

Doesn't matter if they are the # 1 set or not, I vote for the following football sets
as being the most fun to look at because they're 100 % complete with every card scanned :

    1951 Topps Magic - 707 Sportscards

    1954 Bowman - skittles

    1955 Bowman - Pizza's

    1958 Topps - skittles

    1962 Fleer - Wolfbear's

    1963 Topps - Wolfbear's

    1964 Philadelphia - Frank Evanov

    1964 Topps - Wolfbear's

    1972 Topps - Remobolan's

Hall of Fame Rookie Players - JasP24's

Of course, I'm a bit prejudiced ... image

    1964 Philadelphia - Frank Evanov

I would have to agree this is an awesome set. Only 16 cards can be improved to the set for a perfect completion. Not only are the cards scanned in but a great summary has been written about each player. Nice job.

  • 50s Baseball, got to be

    Schloss 59 Williams

already covered extensively in a recent SMR.

Will be very interesting to see if he can find the 4 existing PSA 10s he's missing to achieve 0 of 0 pop highers for the set. Even more interesting to know what he'll end up paying for them...

Since I am the "Golfcollector" I will chime in on my niche on the set registry pages with some great MISC sets.

And of course...these are all golf related.

Best Modern Set - The Ultimate Nicklaus Collection - Jack Nicklaus Player Set. At 94.38 % complete on a 160 card set, (and some very tough or low numbered I might add) I think this is a very impressive 1st year entry.

Best Vintage Set. - Peter Parker - 1927 Churchman Famous Golfers Small. Ok, Ok so I am a bit biased here, but I used to rule the roost on this bad boy and now am #3! Peter hits the charts this year with a stunning weighted GPA of 8.08. Not bad for a set that is almost 80 years old. Knowing his passion for this one, I see that GPA continuing to climb, although upgrading his current set will be quite a feat!

Best Player Set - McDobbs - Bobby Jones Basic set. This one is equally impressive. Only missing 1 card to be complete and some of these cards in these grades would set you back new car purchase! 3 1920's Bobby Jones cards graded Mint 9! Are you kidding me! I met Mike at the National and actually got to see the whole collection in person. IMPRESSIVE

Hall of Fame Golf Collecting Member. VintageGolfcards- Jack has 11 vintage golf sets registerd. They are 1914 Marsuma, 1923 Copes Golf Strokes, 1924 Wills Golfing; 1927 Churchman Large Series #1, 1928 Churchman Large Series #2, 1928 Millhoff Famous Golfers, 1930 Wills Famous Golfers, 1931 Churchman Prominent Golfers Large, 1936 John Cotton Golf Strokes a/b, 1936 Player Championship Golf Courses, and the Walter Hagen Master Set. Guess what. He is #1 in all ELEVEN of them. A truly remarkable collection.

  • For the football fans! And no ... PSA did not consult me on these awards image !

    PSA SET REGISTRY AWARDS 2005

William Gray - 1948 Leaf (Basic Set) - Best Vintage Football Set of the Year (pre-1960)
No matter what sport, no matter which set, 1948 Leafs are really tough! The 98-card 1948 Leaf football set is no exception. Containing a host of key rookies including but not limited to those of Sid Luckman, Bobby Layne, Sammy Baugh, Leo Nomellini and Chuck Bednarik, this issue is full of star power. Unlike this set's baseball and boxing sisters, the football issue can be found more often with booming eye-appeal. William Gray has assembled a 100% complete set with a GPA of 7.93 - more than 1.5 GPA points ahead of the next closest competitor, which really illustrates the difficulty. This set is certainly one that combines popularity and difficulty in an extreme way. William must have shown a great deal of patience building this one.

Dave Lemon - 1965 Topps Tall Boy - Best Vintage Football Set of the Year (1960-1971)
Last year, we honored the first complete set - ever - to reach an overall GPA of PSA NM-MT 8 or better. This year, not only did Dave Lemon meet that challenge, he exceeded it! With a GPA of 8.28, Lemon can now claim to have the finest PSA graded 1965 Topps football set known. In fact, Lemon has three sets in the top 20 within the category. Wow, he must really like this set. This set is filled with short prints, some tough checklists and one of the most significant football cards in the hobby - the Joe Namath short print rookie card. The large format and bright colors have created huge demand for this issue with high-end examples setting records in recent times. Tougher than its 1969-70 basketball counterpart, high-end examples are rarely offered.

Museum of Sports History - 1986 Topps - Best Modern Football Set of the Year (1972 to present)
In a year when the greatest receiver in NFL history, Jerry Rice, retired, we felt it was appropriate to honor such a well received set. The 1986 Topps football set offers two monster rookie cards in the aforementioned Rice and star quarterback Steve Young - both ex-49ers with plenty of mention in the NFL record books. In addition to the star attractions, the pesky green borders make these cards very tough in PSA Gem Mint 10 with edge chipping the main condition obstacle. This winning set is head and shoulders above the rest in the category with 99.75% completion and a GPA of 9.30 - no one is even close.

2005 PSA SET HALL OF FAME

Jim Crandell (Davalillo) - 1952 Bowman Small Football
When it comes to vintage football cards, this set is usually overshadowed by its big brother - the 1952 Bowman Large set. Over the past few years, collectors have learned to appreciate the little brother more and more. In fact, most hobbyists believe that this set is actually tougher than the Bowman Large issue. This HOF set is 96.53% complete with a GPA of 7.98 and no one on the current finest list is remotely close.

Dave Lemon - 1965 Topps Tall Boy Football
After inducting the first PSA NM-MT 8 or better complete set into the Hall of Fame last year, we couldn't ignore this one. With a GPA of 8.28, this HOF set has actually surpassed its predecessor in quality. Anchored by the Joe Namath SP rookie card and tougher than most collectors would think, this set only has two PSA NM-MT 8 or better representatives to date as the competition heats up.
