Home Metal Detecting

I found this token with my first metal detector

many years ago and still have not been able to find any information on it. Are there any token experts here?

The scan's may be difficult to read.

The obverse reads: Franklin Pierce 14th Presedent USA 1853 - 1857

The Reverse reads: Poor Pierce congressman United States Senator Brigadere General in Mexican War Greater soldier than statesman Favored slavery until outbreak of civil war Fires of Civil War Lighted.

I would love to find out where this came from. I found it in my grandmothers yard in Western Iowa. The only thing I found online is someone found the same token on the East Coast, I think NJ, and He was looking for information too.

  • That looks like a President's token from a gas station. I know Shell stations had tokens similar to that. I've also seen tokens like yours too. Gas stations gave those out all through the years...probably anywhere from the 1960s to early 1990s.
    I lust for silver.

  • Very possible I guess. I found the token I believe in 1984. It, I would say had been in the ground for quite a while at that point, so maybe early 60's.

The only thing that makes me think it might be older is the fact that I can't find anything on the web about it. I have looked up a lot of stuff from tokens, to bottles, to buttons and usually find tons of info on seemingly obscure stuff. If this was a token given by a gas station in fairly recent times, I would expect to find something about it. Also the wording just doesn't sound right for that time period. We just don't talk like that now. But to be honest, your explanation is the best one that I have heard in the last 21 years, so thanks for your input and until I find something different, I will assume that you are right.
  • i actually own the entire set. i bought the entire thing for a few bucks back in the '80's.

you can try this link for further research:

  • Thanks for the info guys. I really appreciate it. At least I now have some idea where it came from. Indeed probably a service station.
  • Possiable token give away in the 1940's at gas stations. I have one with G Washington on it. Same Obverse (With His profile) and also Discription on the Reverse. New to this but have been metal detecting since 1983. Hope this helps you.
