As for hints or helps get a Dalton and Hammer's "The Provincial Token - Coinage of the 18th Century". This is the bible for Conder Tokens. Go to Abe's Books and do a search for one there.
No that the Main Book is out of the way may I suggest R.C. Bells "Commercial Coins 1787 - 1804" copies of which can be found also at Abe's Books. These 2 would be a great start before buying anymore tokens. The are so many of them it may give you a direction you want to procede in which to collect them.
Here's a link to the CTCC or Conder Colletors Society. It has some info and links to other places.

<< <i> ones that they have seen are highly suspect of being counterfeits, any way to tell an original from a fake without certification... >>
If you suspect that there are a great number of counterfeits,,Why would you chance buying one raw,,or even finding one so rare NOT certified??
FOR SALE Items
Modern counterfeits are really not much of a problem with Conder tokens. There is only one commonly encountered one and it is a fake of a Warwickshire John Wilkinson 1790 token. Now contemporary counterfeits is another thing altogether. There are many of those, but they are cataloged in Dalton and Hamer and normally collected right along with the genuine issues In fact it would be possible to put together a nice collection just collecting the contemporary counterfeits.
