We have decided there is starting to be too much competition in this area of collecting old copper please move onto anything dated 1812 and laterimage

As for hints or helps get a Dalton and Hammer's "The Provincial Token - Coinage of the 18th Century". This is the bible for Conder Tokens. Go to Abe's Books and do a search for one there.

No that the Main Book is out of the way may I suggest R.C. Bells "Commercial Coins 1787 - 1804" copies of which can be found also at Abe's Books. These 2 would be a great start before buying anymore tokens. The are so many of them it may give you a direction you want to procede in which to collect them.

Here's a link to the CTCC or Conder Colletors Society. It has some info and links to other places.

  • Is there such a thing as a Irish Tavern or Pub token, The people I deal with say there is but they are expensive and most of the ones that they have seen are highly suspect of being counterfeits, any way to tell an original from a fake without certification...or is there a reliable online dealer...Thanks...image Interested in tokens from the late eighteenth century...

If you suspect that there are a great number of counterfeits,,Why would you chance buying one raw,,or even finding one so rare NOT certified??
  • Hey, taking chances in coin collecting is the name of the game. What I'am looking for are exact weights and exact photos of a certain tokens and then and only then I can cut my chances down a little, But as of now I can't even find a reliable dealer that has knowledge of these. Also I don't even know what to look for, But hey you gotta start somewhere, Right.... image
  • I took a quick look through Ireland (there are literally several hundred tokens) and I didn't see any specific pub or tavern tokens. There are two Dublin tokens, one D&H 387, for T O Bryen that carries the inscription Dealer in Whisky. There is also D&H 398 from M Murphy that has the same reverse die Dealer in Whisky. (Both of these tokens are scarce.) There are probably other pub and tavern tokens but not from Ireland. (In fact one that comes to mind id Hampshire 79 and 80 which were issued by a group of three business men, each of which were tavern owners and these tokens could be used in any of their establishments.)

Modern counterfeits are really not much of a problem with Conder tokens. There is only one commonly encountered one and it is a fake of a Warwickshire John Wilkinson 1790 token. Now contemporary counterfeits is another thing altogether. There are many of those, but they are cataloged in Dalton and Hamer and normally collected right along with the genuine issues In fact it would be possible to put together a nice collection just collecting the contemporary counterfeits.

Farthing has posted all the best links. I bought once from Flamouth but have never been there. ( I''d say they are a 3 or 4 hour drive from me )
