1990 Leaf Set now complete in PSA 10

Congratulations to Vintage Corvette, who has now completed his 1990 Leaf set in all PSA 10 GEM MINT condition. A Hurculean effort. Would be great to see the set opened up with scans sometime, now that it is complete...

Someone must have got that checklist graded recently. Amazing set.
  • Just curious, how much would that set be worth all in PSA 10?

I don't think we have any data points to make any such assessment. There have been a number of high-grade 1986 Fleer Basketball sets that have sold in completely graded form - but nothing like this: Modern, perfect, tough. One might think that, at least in the present price environment, a set such as this likely would not be sold, as the amount realized at auction would probably be less than it cost to build.

Very nice. 1990 Leaf is notoriously hard to find in high grade as many were destroyed by kids who didn't know cards would ever be worth money. Did Mr. Mint recently uncover a hoard of 1990 Leaf cards or something? Because I doubt more than a handful of truly gem mint 1990 leaf have survived the last decade and a half. image

DBH, have you forgotten the lessons of your previous posts? If PSA grades them as gem mint, then they are truly gem mint. Says so right on the slab. Do not lose your faith, we're counting on you!

Are 1990 Leaf cards that hard to find, I mean just over all. I know they were made in more limited quantities than other sets of that year, but by how much? Doing any set in PSA 10 is a task in itself and a congrats go out.

That is amazing! Imagine keeping focused on a set like the 90 leaf for 2 or 3 years! I have a very short attention span so I would never ever have the patience to stay the course! I give who ever it is credit they love sports cards new and old I am sure! This is a huge window of opportunity for some to grade sets like this in some sort of sheet form for a 1/4 of the price? Imagine the storage and cost for a set something this large could be cut down by having it in one book that can be veiwed on a regular basis!

I would hazard to say it's about as difficult to put together a 1990 Leaf set in PSA 10 as it would be to put together a 1989 Bowman set in PSA 10. The only question is whether or not you want such a set graded. If you do, the hardest part would be waiting on eBay for someone who actually went through the trouble of grading a Paul Gibson card.

Anyway, to those that criticize PSA, let them take a look at the overwhelming success of the PSA Set Registry. image

Well I am not complaining, I am doing 84 Topps, go figure. Sure is not for investment purposes in my case, just less people to have to get into bidding wars for cards in this year.image

pretty amazing, just wondering , does Allen R King and Vintage Corvette have a little competition going on. I King is at 9.97 on this set and they both have multiple 1963 fleer sets and beat the crap out of each other to insane prices when they both need the card. Vintage corvette even bids insanely to upgrade his second set.
  • Modern sets are always faced with the stigma that the cards are so plentiful they are not worth grading. These guys, like myself, collect for the love of a particular set. Setting the goal to build a set in PSA 10 just adds to the challenge. I was fortunate to complete my 89 Score Football set in PSA 10. It took over 1 year to find the last card (J. Taylor RC). Congrats to Corvette for seeing this project through to the end. image

  • This task is really monumental for all 80's set (90 Leaf included). If you set out to grade the best examples yourself, it takes a lot of product to find submittable examples. If you submit with PSA 10 expectations, and screen as such this material, the best you can expect is a 25% PSA 10 return rate. That's after you have sorted through the appropriate wax boxes, rack boxes or factory sets eliminating approximately 90% of what is in there as unsubmittable.
I recently, for instance busted up two vending boxes of 86' Topps Baseball. That's 1000 cards. If there were 20 cards total submittable with a shot at a 10 that's a lot.
I busted an 84'Donruss factory set and found only 24 cards out of 660 that I was sure would PSA 9 or better.
And that's not to mention the fact that there is a cyclical nature to most of these issues. The easy cards (one's that are often nicely centered) come up over and over again as a part of those percentages. Problem is, once you have plugged in your PSA 10 for that card, you don't need that one anymore. Do the math on that 84' Donruss example. If I could expect 25% PSA 10; thats 6 cards out of 660; 1% of the total reviewed. And again once you have those six, if they are really nice in your next lot you push those aside. Thus add diminishing returns to your case busting efforts.
This is what makes this all so truly impressive to me.

  • Vintage Corvette's been going wild buying 1993 Refractors too. All 9's and 10's. He's bought probably $35,000+ in just '93 Refractors over the past 4-5 months.

they def got into some wars over a few 1990 leafs - i remember watching some of the cards b/c i needed them and then i check the final amounts and they where insane

well this is going to send me search for my 90 leafs at my parents this weekend. i was working in a card shop at the time and picked up lots of boxes. i think that i have about 5 complete sets if my memory serves correct, as well as an unopened box from each series. i had some sosa's graded and one came back a 10. maybe that should getting me going on this set. but i will have to invest in some strong lamps and mags to make sure i send in the best.

if you think the 90 leaf is tuff, i dont want to think what it would take to get a PSA10 1989 Pro-Set FB set. those of us that collect football and had experience opening those packs, know how bad the cards were cut. if you pick up a random stack of cards you would see about 5-8 different sizes.

That's a fact! I opened cases of that stuff. Although the overall quality of the cards was good for that time, centering and mis-cuts were also all over the place.
