An error is usually an isolated or short lived event; a mistake or series of mistakes in the
coining process. A variety is a difference of some sort in a die. There can be a little overlap
in the terms and there isn't perfect agreement on them but misstuck coins are errors and
    misstruck dies cause varieties.

A Die Varieity is just that - something on the Die itself that differentiates it
from another die - can be an engraving error or difference, a die gauge,
a repunched mintmark, a doubled die, etc.

Although the term "Error" in general conversation includes Varieties, an
Error is more specifically used as a term for Mechanical errors - something
that goes wrong/different in the minting process - from the planchet strip
being formed and punched, to the upsetting and annealing operation, and
thru the minting of the actual coin itself - a double strike, an off-center,
a wrong metal, or off metal, or clad layer error, etc......

That's the short version.....hope this helps........

I think of a error as a minting accident while a variety is a minting accident done on purpose.

If you do a search in the forum, coppercoins did a fantastic breakdown of the differences about a year or two ago.
