Here's a pretty 1878 - 8 Tail Feather Morgan Dollar that I purchased tonight at auction which appears to have nice luster and some light cameo contrast. How do you like her?

You could crack that out, put it in your own holder, and sell it on Ebay as a MS64 DMPL!

Just kidding - you wouldn't do thatimage

    Nice coin.

That is a nice looking 63. I can't quite tell what VAM it is, though.

As promised, I am updating this thread because today I received the subject 1878-8TF PCGS MS-63 Morgan Dollar.

This coin has some extreme doubling in the date, the obverse stars and also within "Liberty". I'll have to take some close-up photos for the VAM-ologists in the forum to help me properly attribute it.

This coin has beautiful higly lustrous satiny field surfaces with very strong cartwheel luster effect, and light cameo contrast on the devices.
It's a very high eye-appeal MS-63 with interesting VAM doubling to boot! image

Here are the first digital photos that I took of this new 1878-8TF Morgan Dollar that I received today. The contact mark in the jaw area under the ear is hardly noticeable on the coin (very light and slightly shiny area), although very pronounced on the photograph.

    << Sure looks better than a 63! >>

Shamika: I agree with you, especially because of the really flashy satiny lustrous mark-free fields, and their pretty contrast against lightly cameoed devices.

This coin has the most intensely doubled date (shifted left) of any Morgan Dollar that I have observed. I'll have to take some close-up photos of the date at some point in the future to show this to my fellow forum members.

    She's definitely a keeper!!! image

  • Probably a VAM19. Liberty doubled, as is part/most of the date. VAM20 is scarcer variety, and has doubling completely on the date, and ollar in dollar at the bottom. VAM19 very common.

SpudMasher: Thanks for the VAM-ification information on my 1878-8TF Morgan. From what I observed using my binocular microscope last night, the date appears to be very strongly doubled, and shifted to the left. The doubling is the strongest that I have ever personally seen on any Morgan.

I'll take a closer look at her tonight using my VAM book as reference. This is a fun coin to own, and also interesting to attribute!! image

VAM-18. Listed as scarce above 63.

LIBERTY is strongly doubled upwards and to the left on this obverse. The date, showing spectacular doubling to the right, has the largest shift in the Morgan series. The stars on both sides of the date are strongly tripled. PLURIBUS and UNUM exhibit only minor doubling. The late die state, which is scarce, shows evidence of clashing. The reverse shows a so-called 'extra berry' on the left wreath. Actually, this 'berry' was formed out of the leaf tip on the outside of the wreath. The eagle's lower jaw is doubled. The word OF is strongly doubled. The letters in '--ED STATES OF AM-- show dramatic doubling. The VAM 18 is considered a common 8-TF variety in all grades, is often found semi-Prooflike, but is unknown with full two-sided Proof-like or DMPL surfaces.
