Unfortunately, yes. Mostly ignorant people who have very little or no knowledge of coins.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

Absolutely. They would have quit doing it long ago if it didn't make money.

They had a special offer for 1986-2005 silver eagle sets graded MS-69 by NGC. They were special 20th anniversary sets in a wooden box. Each coin had same serial number except last 2 digits. I heard they sold over 2,000 sets in one night.
  • Last night they had $2 bank roll "Ocean in view"nickles for the unbeleavably low investment price of aboat $7 a roll.image

I think I'll just get them from the bank. image
  • BTW,

    Thanks!image

The main reason i started this thread was because i inherited from my stepfather
a large coin collection & watching SAHtv, it looks like he may of bought some
years back from them. I was never a coin collector before but it looks like i'm one now!
Theres some really beautiful coins here and i'm trying to read as much plus watch
ebay to see what some are doing. Down the road i would like to send some off to PCGS
for grading but first i need to learn what & what not to send them.
This forum is the most educational area i've ever come across & FUN!, Thanks to all of you!!!

  • In the 1870's there were people selling the Brooklyn Bridge to people that were visiting NYC. I think that is when the saying "There's one born every minute" was "coined" (excuse the pun). In the 1880's there were 5 cent pieces that were gold plated to make them seem half-eagles.

It is difficult and risky enough to buy coins through EBay or other auctions sight-unseen using pictures that often bear little relationship to the coin you receive.

I have nothing against "moderns". I have been a subscriber to the U.S. Mint pre-order wishlist programs ever since inception.

But there are a lot of people that get burned who then turn around and say that people that are involved with coins are all dishonest.

Shop at Home can be fine for buying garden equipment. I only wish that people that are attracted by SAH would ask around before spending twice or three times more than what these "precious collector's items" are worth.

  • I got restarted in coin collecting almost ten years ago from an inheritance of part of my grandfather's collection, which consisted of pocket change his grandparents had saved since they came to the States. It consists of circulated Indians, Morgans, 2 and 3 centers, etc. After immersing myself in this stuff, an episode of SAH almost induced me to buy a complete set of Franklins. The choices were a circ set for $350 or a BU set for $550. This was in '96 or '97. No sale, thanks, but watching the show when they featured classics really whetted my appetite for more. As much as collectors like to slam their merchandising practices, the show does provide a service. It's too bad they were tutored in business ethics by a Ferengi.

I started collecting in 1978 and I've seen a lot of changes. I remember when ANACS certificates were supposed to be the answer to all the coin collecting problems. Now it's PCGS that collectors trust (and rightly so). Are people crooked in the coin business? Of course. Anytime money changes hands, there are people who will be dishonest just to make a buck. Especially when you don't know much about what you are buying. That's why after all these years I wouldn't buy a rare coin unless it was in a PCGS slab. Look at the state of American business with all the scandals such as Enron. I watch Coin Vault for entertainment, but I wouldn't buy anything because they are ripping people off. What we have to do when we are spending or investing money is do our research and educate ourselves. Caveat emptor!
