2005 SMS vs non SMS mintages...

I see from the US Mint's production figures website that 2,520,000 of the P & D sacagawea dollars were made so far this year; what % of that is SMS vs. non SMS? I'm thinking the non SMS coins to be quite a bit scarcer, but is anyone going to want to pay $100.00 for a MS66 version down the road when MS68 and MS69 SMS are plentiful?

  • Hi kiyote. I think this is a very good question. I wonder when the mint will release this information, and if they will break it down in this fashion. I sure hope the non sms coins retain/increase in value. I gambled and bought a pair of high grade business stike Ca quarters before the mint announced the changes to this years mint sets. I paid a lot more for those than their ms69sf counterparts. I guess only time will tell what the market will stand.

SMS? They made SMS coins in the 60's when there were no proof sets produced. All coins today I consider UNC and it doesn't matter if it comes from the mint or your bank if it'll make the grade. Now the SAC's weren't released to the public after 2001 (very few in 2001) so you had to buy rolls, bags, or mint sets to get them but they weren't much above face to purchase them $25 roll for $35.

People will continue to buy the non satin finish coins and at even higher prices than the same grade of a previous year. The money for 2005 is in the non satin coins. Some people prefer to use these in registries because they match. Others, like the challenge and dont want the satin MS69 handed to them for $80. Whatever reason they have, the no satin coins this year do bring good money.

I have sold all of these so far this year.

    PCGS MS67 P & D California brought close to $70
    PCGS MS67 P & D Minnesota brought close to $120
    PCGS MS67 P Bison sold for $565.

Since 1998 they report mintages for regular issues and numismatic sales separately. Before that they were all combined.
