Has anybody ever bought from someone like this Ebayer?

Have any of you purchased any coins at an auction like this? Being that they are all certified, I would think that 15.00 would be worth it? What do you think?

  • I don't know that particular seller. If he is honest there will be a couple of coins that are worth more than $20.50 ($16 + $4.50 shipping) while there will be 250 that are worth much less. So, if he is honest, there might be a %2 chance it is a good deal. Personally I'd rather just spend $1 on a lottery ticket.

Then again he may not be totally honest. How could you put a slab into a plastic bag and not see what it is? If you are a skeptic you might think there is a chance no valuable coins at all would be shipped.

It doesn't cost much to get your coins certified by TruGrade, Accugrade and so forth. If you read enough threads here people will sometimes ask why $2 coins end up in PCGS, NGC, ICG slabs and they are given several reasons. So just because they are certified doesn't mean they are worth $20!!!
  • Thanks CarlWohlforth.....You probably just saved me some money. It must be the gambling in me.

I'm sure you'll get common date pennies, nickels, and dimes and he's showiing his best stuff but for 20 bucks your not out much even if that's the case. I have brought unsearched (right) walkers for $61 a row but I felt like the Fines and better coins were worth some over spot. I did get a few coins in the teens that graded VG so all in all I was happy with the deal.

  • I hate dutch auctions like these. When I was just getting back into collecting and learning how to use ebay, I had fallen prey to a couple scams like this. "Grab Bag!" "You could get a 1909-S VDB!" "Rare dates found so far..."

The common theme in these scams is they tell you the lots are "unsearched" and that there is some sort of complex random selection process when coins are picked to fulfill orders, thus duping you into thinking you have a chance at getting a rare and valuable coin.

I agree with Russ....it's a screw job, big time. And, no kiss or "thank you" at the end.

    You don't mince your words.

I'd say if you participate is such an auction, you're brewin' for a screwin'!

Check seller's feedback; 35 Negatives & 57 Neutrals in the past 12 months image. That should be enough to keep everyone away. Anyone who bids deserves whatever they get (or don't get). - Preussen

People that have dutch type auctions and say "go fish" know there are a percentage of suckers out there who are going to "GO FISH". Its a crap shoot, face it. A slabbed coin ? ALL SLABBED ? This person has gone through the lot and has less than desireable pieces in his inventory that he is trying to clear out. (just my opinion)

I always thought about selling ONE SQUARE FOOT plots out in my back yard on ebay to the highest bidders and then burying a bunch of coins out there..... you know ? old wheats, buffaloes, an occasional $1, $2.50, or $5 dollar gold Barbers, Indians....just bury something in every square foot there.... and let people come use my metal detector and check out the plot they bought. At least I would give free coffee and have fun with ya. and I would also get my grass turned over image... But these dutch auctions, to me, are like kissing your sister or a tie game. Nobody wins (lets leave the kissing your sister part out, some people take that too far)

Ninety-nine percent will get something they didn't really care to have in the first place, but for 20 bucks.... no big deal

... as for me, No thanks.
And certainly- NO OFFENSE to the Seller is intended in this writing.
Some people sell stories.... Some people buy them.

It's not even a crap shoot. That would imply that there's even a remote chance of getting your money's worth.

As other said, run from this one. When I first discovered certified coins I thought only the good stuff made it into slabs and bought from an auction like this for $10 (+5 S&H). I got a Proof '64 Half in a CoinWorld holder labeled by some bogus grading service. At least it was something I could crack out and put in the type album. Before I could even leave feedback, the seller was naru'd. I wouldn't be suprised if this is the same turd returning to their old scheme.

The pictures show lots of Gold and a PCGS box, but the desciption mentions "and others". Guess how many buyers will get "and others". Probably all!

If you're paying more than 99c for a PCGS slabbed coin - you're paying too much.

$15 is WAY out of line
