Have you ever bought a duplicate before finishing a set?

With limited funds, I'd be inclined to finish a set before buying duplicates.

Did you ever see two examples of a coin that you likes so much that you bought BOTH? Did you later feel guilty about it?

I have been tempted in the past and currently haunted by a duplicate that remains on the market. I do my best to NOT have duplicates. When I complete my sets, I will consider whether I should continue to purchase these series, move on to something else, or stop collecting altogether. image

Yes, I currently have about 25 dups in my MS64FBL franklin collection. It's very hard to get some of the coins in MS64FBL and when they come to market they're getting stupid money IMO. So I've got several MS65/MS66's (upgraded to FBL) and I'm holding them in hopes on of my kids start an MS65 set. One has expressed interest so guess what he get for his birthdays and Christmasimage Really most franklins don't bring enough to worry too much about selling em and will only go up, I built my set about 5 years ago and they've risen some since then.

P.S. - A deal is a deal and if they price is right or a coin is undergraded I snap it up rather I have one or not.

Actually yes. Although I do not plan to complete my early commem set any time soon, I hope to someday complete it. In the meantime, I've owned as many as three Gettysburgs and three Antietams at one time. I tend to be lured to the beauty of different designs along with attractive and unique toning and luster. If I find a coin that falls into all these categories, having duplicates is just fine.image

A time or two I've used coins I had dups that I got at the right price to trade for a coin I needed or an upgrade. A deal is a deal so if you get a chance to buy one and it's a popular series to collect a full series it's really hard to go wrong if your willing to wait until you find the right deal but it could take a few years......JMO.

I buy anything I like even as a duplicate and I am not at all concerned about completing a set. In fact, I often sell set pieces I no longer like and replace them with series duplicates that I like.

In my collection of NGC PL Classic Commems I have as many as five of the same issue, date and mintmark; same thing in Bust Half overdates. I buy anything I like without considering duplication.image
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Yes; among the Draped Bust halves, I bought a second 1801 O.101 and a second 1807 O.104 getting an 1802 O.101 for a date set or many of the other varieties needed for a complete set by die variety.

Among the Draped and large-sized Capped quarters, I also have several duplicates but far from a complete set by date or variety.

I do it all the time. Right now I'm setting aside my Buffs and trying to work on a nice high grade set of Lincolns.

I keep getting sidetracked. Instead of going date to date, my eyes wander and I pick up something else.

    I have two 09-S VDB's and four 1914-D's.

    They're just hard to resist...................................

If I can find one that beter matches my set, I buy it. I have bought duplicates plenty of times.

You bet. There is just no way of knowing when the right coin is coming along, and if you don't over pay, you can usually do okay. I have three 1921-D Mercury Dimes, and If I can get a better one at the right price, I will have four.

I often will have two or three of any given date/MM, I currently have two 55/55 Lincolns, three 09-SVDB's, and still do not have a complete lincoln date/MM set. And no it does'nt bother me or make me feel guilty.

Money only gets you so far. Sometimes, you need irreplaceable trading material to get someone to let go of the coin you need. So I'll buy a duplicate for my collection if I think I may later be able to hold it hostage. Otherwise, I'm completely not interested in pursuing duplicates.
