New Raw Purchace... Guess the grade before sending in 1884 Morgan (Pics added to show luster)

Picked this up at a local coin store that is going out of business in the area after the hurricane.. The line on the reverse is from the mylar pcgs holder it sits in... there is also alot of luster.

Prolly a 63 or 64. The cheek has some scuff marks, but with such a large image, its possible those marks are insignificant.
    Nice Morgan!

  • Nice coin. If the graders will be in a good mood (you never know when you submit) I'd say MS64.
Worst case should be an MS63.

Trinketts: Would you please provide a bit more detail on the following statement.
<< The line on the reverse is from the mylar pcgs holder it sits in >> image

The only occasion that I know of when PCGS ships coins back in mylar 2 x 2 holders is when they return them in "bodybags" as not gradeable (i.e. DNC).

Sorry it is the mylar flips you get from then to send them in.... I always put new rawp's in them for storage before sending them out...

Trinketts: Thanks for your clarification! image Based on the photos provided I'd say MS-64, with a shot at MS-65.

It seems that the larger the photo size provided, the larger the contact marks appear, and the lower the resulting estimated grade from forum members.

Since your photos are quite large, and seem to magnify the contact marks on Miss Liberty's cheek, I think that the coin will look a bit nicer in hand at 1x magnification than it does on my computer monitor at 8-9x magnification.

  • One thing I like about guess the grades here is you guys are normally 1-2 points off on PCGS holders image So Maybe this can get a 65 lol

I would have to say MS 64

  • I vote 64. If the picture is accurate, luster is subdued, not enough sunshine for a 65, though on marks alone it would make it.
  • Bump for new pics

  • better pirctures = better grade

You might get MS65 with that coin.

Trinketts: You have demonstrated very clearly the benefits of taking photographs of a coin to demonstrate its mint luster, vs. a scanned image showing what appears to be very dull washed-out luster.

Although, I stand by my previously mentioned grade of MS-64 (shot MS-65), in my opinion the new photos do make the coin look prettier than the original scans posted with a better shot at MS-65.

I'll stand by my initial grade and say 64 instead of 63. Very nice luster!
    Much better image!

  • I am going to assume the pictures are accurate. I am going to say MS-65. The hits are very minor. The strike is very good. The luster appears very good.

I like the coin. A very nice example of a MS Morgan.
