Should I get this graded?

Hey ppl! Been awhile since I've been on here. Started playing with my macro camera again and thought I would post another pic. What do you guys think this would grade and would it be worth the time and $$ to send off?? Any insight and wisdom appreciated!!

Try and reshoot the obverse. It is at too much of an angle without enough depth of field. Get more perpendicular to the plane of the coin.

In any event, that looks like a very nice coin. I'm terrible at grading the incused indian gold coins, but it looks to me like a low MS coin (62-64). On getting it graded, I vote "yes"...Mike

I can't grade this series worth a damn. However, I would think it's worth slabbing none the less.

A very nice coin looks like a shot 65 to me.

  • It looks like a very nice ms coin. It's tough to grade these from photos, but I'd say at least a 63.image

Hmmm ... is that a ding between the I and B in Liberty? If so ... I suspect body bag ... ex jewelry piece

    Uhh...rim nick at 11:00?

Damaged, no grade. Although, if they grade trade dollars with all those chopmarks on them they'll grade anything.

    Cheers,

I'm not sure about the 'ex jewelry' verdict, as the surfaces still look pretty nice (though I was thinking nice choice AU & not MS) but that rim damage definitely precludes a grade IMO. If it were on the reverse it might not doom the coin, but on this side -- you're done. Don't bother. Decent coin, but no gem. Not even close.

  • I will venture to say that ungraded the coin is worth about $150 and graded, if it grades in PCGS plastic you are looking at $2000.

Given that it is sort of a key date in unc, it might be worth a try. Be prepared for disappointment, though, as a) there's a strong chance of it bodybagging, and b) while it's impossible to tell from the pic, I'm inclined to think the coin is a nice AU, not unc. Still, given the price tag in MS, it might be worth a try or even a few tries. Sometimes they show some leniency toward tough dates, it seems. I saw a 1901 Morgan last summer in PCGS AU58 with an ungodly horrific rim cut at 6 o'clock on the reverse. It was a nasty coin, but wholesalable in a sight-unseen, selling-the-plastic kind of way for a nice chunk of change regardless. Your coin might fall into that camp.

If that rim ding or nick at 11o'clock on the obverse gets past three graders without calling it environmental damage or "ex-jewelry", then it appears that it would grade pretty easily at MS62 from what I see on the reverse. So if it doesn't get a body bag, you come out way ahead. If it gets bodybagged, you are only out 20 bucks or so.
