Philosophy of Building a set.

You're about to start a new series. (You pick it).

Part of the preparation is to define HOW you are going to build this series. Which do you prefer?

If I can concentrate on one series, I consider that a small victory!

I granted you that ability as an assumption of the question. image
(I have the same problem). image

So far, I'm surprised. I rather ASSUMED that I was less focused than most other collectors, and many would be picking 1 through 3. I'm a 4 man as well.

buy coins that are quality for the grade and the most important thing is... they all do not have to match... if they do, why not stop at one?

Seriously, cast a wide net and throw those that don't met your requirements back. This strategy works because something that you always want surfaces when you least expect it and and true rarity rarely shows up... take advantage of that because such opportunities may never come again.image

Buy what you like, pass on the dogs (although some people's dogs are other people's treasures). image
(Many of the coins in my dime set are high end for the grade. Some are average. And many coins were passed over even when they were bargain priced. Much help from a handful of forum members.)

I've been working toward building a matched set of brown proof indians with good frost and mirrors in the 65-67 grade range. So I chose "attributes".

  • I'm currently working on two sets. My Jefferson Nickel set is all uncirculated since all are affordable. The Walking Liberty set is G to AU depending on the cost and what looks good.

I had the thought of completing a series first and then start upgrading, but I haven't completed any yet so it has thrown my timetable off.

The answer depends on the series you are collecting.

"Play it by ear. Buy what looks good when you run into them."

For me it's all about having fun. I don't get to hung up on whether the coins match in grade, color, or even value.

Once a set is built, I may decide to upgrade some of the coins but I usually just move on to another set.

My collection is all over the place, but I like it. image

Within reason, I usually buy the best I can afford.

  • Based on many of the registry sets I have seen within this forum I'm surprised with the vote count. Most have some kind of theme although they may not be complete with the theme. Whether it be blast white coins, toners or specific grades I can look at sets and get an idea of what the collector was attempting to put together.
