Can artificial toning be dipped off?

Has anyone ever managed to turn an ugly AT coin into a blast white, market acceptable, slabbable piece?

I also had a morgan that I purchased knowing it had artificial toning. I dipped it off and underneath was a coin that was certified by PCGS as an MS65PL.....

I think it is the repeated cycles of dipping/toning that get you. The first dip or two may very well "improve" the coin.

sometimes - not always

some chemicals etch and cause environmental damage

some heat torches from inside

Artificial toning (or natural toning for that matter) is reversible... Dipping is irreversible. Unless you're 100% confident a coin is AT, I for one would leave it alone.

Edited to add: I guess it COULD be AT'd again and again, but NT would take a while

Russ. Whoa, that is depressing and uplifting at the same time. I have a maybe pl morgan that is just ugly do to a fingerprint, I can see a lot of potential in the coin. I'd like to erase the nasty fingerprint and figer tone...what do I do?

Dipping, when done properly, is safe and usually improves the appearance of any uncirculated coin. Experience is the key.

Russ' coin looked NT to me- and quite attractive at that! Too bad its been dipped!
