Old Penny Board from 1934 - Instructions on how to harshly clean your coins!

We listed some old coin boards on eBay the other day and noticed something funny (in a very sad sort of way). Check out the verbage at the bottom of the Lincoln Cent board. It says, "Clean your specimens with a soft eraser or a little vinegar before placing them in the board.". Ouch!

Oh my. I once put a copper penny in some vinegar to see what would happen. It did not smell good at all!

Vinegar is acetic acid! What would it do? Keep saying that word "ACID" over and over, and let your imagination run wild.

It eats all the copper. You can try it on a penny yourself - use a pre-1982 (mostly copper) for "worst" results.

I once owned a coin book from the 1950's entitled "How To Clean Coins". I think that most coin cleaning occurred in the 50's and 60's.

I remember cleaning my wheat cents with an eraser while sitting in class.......ignoring the teacher. Good thing all of my wheaties were common and low grade!
