Feedback on programs to organize your collection.

I am currently working on a comprehensive database program for sportscards. My goal is to have one program that covers Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Boxing, and Golf. It will also cover graded or raw cards. Are any of you using a collection software and what are the drawbacks, dislikes, or problems, if any? Your input is appreciated! image

P.S. - If anyone would be interested in helping me test the program when it is up and running LMK!

  • what database software are you using?
  • I am writing my own fairly elaborate system for tracking, selling, bidding, auctioning etc etc integrating with ebay, paypal, my website and all that jazz. Found most of the junk available to be just that... or at least not extensible/customize-able enough for what I wanted. Although I was coming at it from the point of view of a dealer needing a way to track inventory, and sales and fees, and shipping costs etc.

Given my current development schedule and grandiose ideas for the product, I should have it available for purchase in about 10 years...

For a simpler db to track a collection, some simple attributes of cards - price, dates, grades etc - I've seen lot of nice MS Access solutions. Nothing commercial I could point you to specifically though, just some programs other collectors have shown me here and there.

Access. If it works good enough and the need arises totry and integrate it with the internet/multiple users I may look into a larger system (Oracle, etc.). So far I haven't seen anything that encompasses all the sports and attributes I want. I've seen the ad in SCD (The Card Collector) but I haven't pulled the trigger on buying yet. I'd rather do it myself. image

I am not as elaborate. I just have a list in Excel with year, card, grade, value/cost, etc.... I have about 2,000 cards listed so far. Started with the most valuable and am working through my collection (slowly). Have inputted my PSA cards and now working on some better raw cards. When I buy cards I put in the list along with purchase price/date. I have a dollar total for cards I have bought and another total for estimated value for cards I have had forever. I find it easy so I don't purchase duplicate cards, remember what grades I have for different cards, etc.... Good luck!
  • I did the card collector when it came out in the mid-90's. It took forever for me to input the cards. Then to update your prices, you had to get update diskettes. It worked good for a while.

As you put your own grades (M, NM, E, etc.) in the system, it was interesting to see what I thought was Mint and Near Mint then as compared to now.

how exactly are you going to use this database? Is this for tracking auctions? Or a personal storage warehouse?

I hope to be able to eventually use it for both. Setting up the data tables has been fairly easy up to this point. The difficult, daunting part will be entering the actual data in the tables. That will take me a while. image
