You know? When I first acquired my 1909-S VDB, I was worried about it being a fake. Someone here posted a website that gives examples to diagnose the mint mark, the VDB and common die gouges. Does anyone know where that site is?
Quickly whipping out my OGTCGACD (PCGS/ Scott Travers' book), I found that none of the diagnostics mentioned either on counterfeit or genuine coins could be discerned from the poor scans.
I personally would never buy such a coin sight unseen on the 'Bay, or elsewhere, unless it came recommended by a trusted friend or dealer (hopefully one in the same).
A coin like this (raw & key date & heavily counterfeited) should never be bought off eBay. Don't do it unless you like to gamble.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

<< <i>The S looks like the right syle to me, but something odd in the enlarged photo of the obverse, why is there a circular light area around the mintmark? >>
The mintmark on genuine ones LOOKS like the area around it was tooled. Check out the pictures in the PCGS grading book.
Can't tell from the images provided. I don't think anyone could tell from the images provided. If there's not a good plan for returns stay away from it. Else, it might be a decent buy.
