Funny how they do not show a large pic of the S like they do the V.D.B.

The S looks like the wrong type.

If I'm not mistaken, there are four obverse dies that were used for the SVDB. Coppercoins is the man to look at it... image

  • You know? When I first acquired my 1909-S VDB, I was worried about it being a fake. Someone here posted a website that gives examples to diagnose the mint mark, the VDB and common die gouges. Does anyone know where that site is?

Quickly whipping out my OGTCGACD (PCGS/ Scott Travers' book), I found that none of the diagnostics mentioned either on counterfeit or genuine coins could be discerned from the poor scans.

I personally would never buy such a coin sight unseen on the 'Bay, or elsewhere, unless it came recommended by a trusted friend or dealer (hopefully one in the same).

    But that's just me.

    Caveat Emptor.
  • The S looks like the right syle to me, but something odd in the enlarged photo of the obverse, why is there a circular light area around the mintmark?

A coin like this (raw & key date & heavily counterfeited) should never be bought off eBay. Don't do it unless you like to gamble.

The mintmark on genuine ones LOOKS like the area around it was tooled. Check out the pictures in the PCGS grading book.

  • It also looks like the VDB is stamped in and not raised. Maybe I am wrong, but it does not look right.

Can't tell from the images provided. I don't think anyone could tell from the images provided. If there's not a good plan for returns stay away from it. Else, it might be a decent buy.
