1780 Mexico 8 Reales - Charles III -- Choice Mint State -- Photos

As promised, here's another update to my previous World Crowns & Thalers thread regarding the progress that I have made... So far, I have catalogued and photograped my foreign coin collection, and today submitted 33 coins to PCGS for World Economy Level Service Grading.

Here's the second coin photo post. This 1780 Mexico Charles III 8 Reales appears to be in Choice Mint State condition to me, and looks much prettier in hand than in this rather dull and lifeless photo. We'll see what PCGS has to say.

I'd appreciate any of your comments about the coin, since I am not a learned "Dark Sider"

  • A very nice piece. Can't tell for sure but looks like it may have had an old cleaning. If they do slab it - I'd say AU 55.

GDJMSP: Thanks for your post! I agree that based on the photos, the coin has a lackluster appearance, and not much eveidence of mint luster. However, in hand this Charles III 8 Reales has a slightly prooflike reflectivity blooming from underneath an attractive old toning of browns with some blue highlights.

It is always difficult to grade coins from photos, however with this photo I was trying to focus on coin and detail identification, rather than full luster demonstration.

I will be quite interested to see what PCGS has to say about this coin when they get a look at it. I'll update this thread when I find out how they grade it.

You were asking so I gave my honest opinion. Sadly my comments had nothing to do with the lack of luster in the pics, but with the fine lines in the surfaces that your excellent pics do show. But from what I have seen in the past, PCGS can often be forgiving with these coins and they may well slab it. I do wish you the best of luck in the outcome image

GDJMSP: Thanks for providing your input. You were correct, that I was looking for honest opinions, and I appreciate you taking the time to post yours. image

I believe that the fine lines which you are referring to are die polish striations which I had noticed on the coin's semi-PL surfaces. I will be interested to see what PCGS graders think about it, and the rest of the lot that I have just submitted.
