What scanner should I buy?

I think I am going to buy a scanner and wondered what one to get. I'd like to keep the price as low as possible (maybe under $100?) but still be able to get good looking scans for posting here, registery sets, selling on Ebay. I'd be scanning both cards and coins.

Another scanner question I had is how do you guys put the cards on there to take a scan and then pick it back up off the glass surface without damaging it, do you take scans in sleeves/holders? I would think it might be hard to pick up a mint flat card off a flat glass surface because you might chip an edge or ding a corner.

  • Well if you are selling older cards on Ebay you may want to just leave them in the sleeves if you are worried about handling them too much.
If you plan on scanning psa slabs or any graded cards for that matter you really should look for a scanner that either says ccd or charge-coupled device. They are able to handle the depth because of the thickness of the slab. The scanner I have now is not ccd and my scans of graded cards tend to be blurry.
  • I've had cheap scanners and high dollar ones and they both do about the same job. I always scan with the card in a top loader with a penny sleeve and make sure to add that in my description. Be careful with scanning the coins because of nicking or scratching the glass on the scanner.....

stay away from the cheap Cannon LIDE20.. 30.. whatever.. I have one and it works great but graded cards come out real blurry... I use a epson for graded cards but it's not mine.

    I have a Visioneer OneTouch 9120
I have no complaints...its fast, easy to use, and produces some nice scans. And I think I paid like 60-80 bucks for it. Im very happy with it.
  • Knuckles,

I just purchased the Cannon LIDE at Circuit City a couple days ago. It's sitting next to me here still in the box and because i read this post i will be returning it asap. Thanks for the heads up, i need something that scans my PSA cards

What type of Epson have you used ? I know you said it wasn't yours but i was wondering if you happened to know the price.

    thanks, Dave

I bought a Cannon 4200F at Office Depot (or was it Max?) about six weeks ago and it's pretty nice. Works fine for PSA slabs.

    Example:

ajw, how much was it? That's 100 times better than the LIDE canons.

Dave, it's an Epson Perfection 1660.. It's about a year or two old and was around $300 I think.. One of those fancy ones that can scan negatives and stuff..

I think mine was around $100. I wouldn't have paid much more than that. Mine also has a film scanner, for what that's worth. (which is nothing to me).
  • Visioneer 7300 Flatbed. Works good. Got it under $50 on Ebay.

Anyone who has to ask a question such as this, should buy a HP. HP has the easiest software to use. I know some people who have bought "no name" scanners and can't even get them to work right. HP is very user friendly - and the scan quality is excellent.
