Is there any truth to the CW Editorial about the Secrecy at the ANA?
In the most recent issue of CW, the editor wrote an editorial about the current state of secrecy at the ANA and how all important meetings are held in Executive Session and are not open to members' inspection. I have not followed the ANA's operations closely enough to know if this is an exagerration or if it is fact (the same editor recently wrote a wacky article about having ICG and PCGS publically justify the grades that they gave to the aluminum Lincoln cent; so I am not sure what to believe in these editorials). Does anyone know if things have been getting more secretive at the ANA (compared to the past)? Also, has anyone tried to get more information about what goes on in these Executive Sessions? The editor raises at least one good point. With the recent removal of the elected board member, there is really no way for us to find out of this was justified or exactly what the circumstances were surrounding his removal. When I joined the ANA, I didn't know I had to learn the super secret handshake to find out truly what goes on in the organization.

As Artie Johnson used to say...."v-e-r-y interesting".
(I may be wrong here, it was several years ago)
If so, she should have a good insight of how things are done or need to be done.
Not that I believe everything in CW, but the ANA has changed IMO.

I endorse Ms. Deisher's call for more public meetings.
I do not wish to categorize Mr. Cippoletti as a dictator, without more information.
I am certaint that we will hear more about this.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

<< <i>There was a hour long discussion about this at our coin club meeting last friday. >>
Man...that's one meeting I would've walked out on.
I'm not in the ANA...never have been in the ANA...and frankly don't care.
<< <i>You all are on the ANA's "list" now...should have just kept yer kissers zipped. >>
Talk about the "Big Brother" concern. Hope you don't live your life worrying about things like this. Nobody really cares.

The editorial in CW was intriguing - but but the question of what confidence was broken is the real issue. I find it hard to believe that with a board of 8 members no one is talking. CW ought to know what is going on; I'm sure the "insiders" all know beyond the board of 8. Why aren't they publishing it yet?

I think Beth's editorial has merit. Too much goes on behind closed doors. I think Walter should fight this and get his reputation restored. He deserves your support.
<< <i>I would think an elected board member should be allowed an open forum rather than thrown out without any further information given. Perhaps the 7-0 votes was under severe pressure - The "You're next" syndrome. Walter is one of the good guys in the hobby, as far as I'm concerned. He helps with getting kids involved in numismatics more than anyone, with the exception possibly of Ed Kusmar. Anyone who runs for the board has got to be given a fair shake, they are after all essentially volunteers

I would like to hear what type of confidential info he released prior to giving support. I am an ANA Life Member also.

Exactly! The board had to sign non-disclosure agreements. This is something new since the new director took over. Regardless of the type of information, if everyone who ever served on the board were executed for divulging information, there would have never been anyone left!
If the director (with the board huddled, shivering from fear, in the corner) can just oust someone with great fanfare for whatever reason, then the ANA is headed into a dictatorship, although it's not like they've never had one. The problem is transparency - when things are done secretively, who knows what’s going on!
Rumor: Cliff Mishler tore up his Life Membership badge over this.

Probably difficult to talk about it without giving out the confidential information that got the first board member bounced. And if the information wasn't all that serious I doubt that the vote to oust him would have been unanimous. You don't throw out a hard working effective volenteer over some pidlily little thing by a unanimous vote. If it wasn't an important confidence I would have expected some of them to stand up for him.
It seems to me that the ANA has a few problems with it's image.
BTW, is their budget public?
Numismatic News editorial regarding the "Secrecy at the ANA"!
Has anyone contacted Jerry Springer ?
I just know that every coin graded by NGC that I sent to PCGS never crossed over. I guess I'd be keeping secrets too

Well, Springer would make the whole ordeal very interesting
Brian Fanton replaces Walter Ostromecki on ANA Board of Governors
Jerry
Walter was here in at the Tucson show doing a Young Numismatist Treasure hunt (or trick-or-Treat as it is that time of year). The dealers hand out donated coins to the kids when they find a certain marker on the table. nearly all the 150 sets of coins were already handed out, and we have one more day to go. By the way the Tucson show was very well attended and business was brisk. I sold Just shy of $100,000 on Friday alone! It surprised me, because this is Tucson after all! The organizers are scheduling a follow-up show in January. I was also up in Las Vegas for set up and the auction, but I don't think I would have done as much there (shall we say, it's too distracting?)

We should all be outraged!
Oct. 1 letter from Walter Ostromecki to Cliff Mishler in reply to his Sept. 26 letter:
Dear Cliff
Thank you for your letter of the 26th September.
While I cannot speak for any other ANA Governor, I consider it my duty to acknowledge any letter, phone call, fax or E-mail I receive from the membership. I believe anyone who contacts me is entitled to that courtesy, especially since it was the membership who elected me. My letter response to you has gotten me into a lot of hot water!
I wonder if the fact that Brian Fanton, who BTW is also a friend, is the runner up to replace Walter had anything to do with this. Perhaps if Walter was in the ANA clique tighter, he would have been handed a private reprimand or maybe nothing at all!

I wonder, too - but after thinking really hard about it - probably not.
this is America, isn't it?????
Will Dwight do the right thing?

Isn't (wasn't?) Mr Fanton named as one of the defendants in a lawsuit recently filed by the ANA and Mr. Cipoletti? If so, it should make for some interesting board meetings.
Edited for spelling, as usual.

It was in a recent issue of Coin World (August time frame?). I remember it from there and from it being discussed on RCC:

Unfortunately, I don't have the issue of CW any more to see exactly who was named in it.
